It's a lively little town, nice to walk around with pavement cafes to sit and watch the world go by and lots of shops.
There is a nice walk along the lake side between Bardolino and Garda or Lasize in the other direction. Lots of ferries and busses run between the various towns on the lake. Sirmione, Malcesine is are worth a visit as is Limone on the other side of the lake.
May is a good time to visit, like anywhere the weather could be mixed but Spring is usually good. I am hoping to visit in May, though will probably be staying in Garda town.
There was a recent topic about the area see http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/forum/lake-garda-travel-advice-t158133.html#p1602463
