This is due to there only being one extra oxygen mask per row in the event of a cabin pressurisation problem. Therefore there can only be one extra person per row otherwise there wouldn't be an oxygen mask available if needed. This is aircraft specific, not airline specific. You'll probably have to sit one behind the other.
