We're thinking of spending a week somewhere within one hour travel of Barcelona in October this year.
We have never been to the region and therefore would appreciate some advice as to what resorts are recommended. We have 2 children who will be 5 and 11 and driving will not be an option, so somewhere with good public transport links is needed.
The idea of the holiday is to split sight seeing in Barcelona with a few relaxing days in a resort.

We are going to Tossa de Mar for 2 weeks in July and plan to go to Barcelona for a few days. I don't know if I can recommend Tossa or not as I've never been before, but it get's excellent reviews on HT:

It's not far from Barcelona and there are regular buses.
We've also been to Blanes and got the train to Barcelona from there. Blanes is a nice place and IMO retains some of it's Spanish-ness as it's still a working Fishing Port. There is plenty to do and Lloret is quite nearby if you want something more "English". The beaches around this area tend to be a bit "shingly" (if that's a word!) but there is an aqua park a bus ride away for the kids (and adults!)
