Hello All,

Has anyone travelled from Santorini to any islands for a day trip?
Please can you advise what island is best to visit? what are the prices?
I am staying in Kamari for two weeks in the summer so I am planning things that I want to do.

Thank you

As we are about to make our first trip to santorini (and greece for that matter) what can we expect in terms of the costs of eating out and food/drink in general. we don not long for 5 star restaurants no do we want the bottom level greasy spoon joint either.

There will be three of us and we will journey in May 2005 and if possible can anyone share with us some ideas about what we need to budget for.
Many thanks

Chris,

We are staying at Villa Limnes, Perissa and leaving with Kosmar on 10th May. To answer your previous question you won't find 5star restaurants in Greece except perhaps in the main centres. You won't find 'greasy spoons' either. I have been going to Greece every year now for the past 15 years. The food is always great but I avoid posh looking places. I try to look for the places that have Greek customers, as the locals know the best places. A lot is said about increasing prices in Greece and Santorini is one of the more expensive islands. As I have said I will be on Santorini in May and I am not expecting it to cost much different to my last Greek trip. I will not be eating at any place with a view; you will find me in the back streets. I always drink the house wine so that keeps the meal price low and certainly lower than UK prices.

Nobody should have a problem finding good cheap restaurants in Santorini even those with a view. We went last October and the quality of the food was generally good.I had the most delicious gyros pitta in Fira town ever and it was really cheap, it's like anything else, shop around, look at the menus. Some places really do charge high prices but you don't have to eat there. The wines in Santorini are very good quality too.

We went to Santorini for our honeymoon last July and had a wonderful time. We ate out two or three times a day, took a sunset cruise of the island to see the sun set over Oia, and used the local buses to visit Fira.

We stayed at the Smaragdi Village in Perissa, about 10 mins walk from loads of bars and tavernas. The beach was empty most days, and quite often there were lots of Greek families there. The sea was quite cold though!

Money wise, we spent around £400 in two weeks, but as I said, we ate out three times a day, had beers, ice-creams etc. whenever we wanted, and did a couple of trips. Oh and we paid about £60 for 2 weeks air conditioning and safe hire out of that as well.

All in all, I loved it, it's a beautiful place. I tried to get hubby to go there again this year, but as we are moving house and just bought a car, we could only afford a week, so we've decided on Crete.

Enjoy!

:? :?: Getting some mixed reports about the worst possible subject to put into the public domain but hey event the queen does it.

Toilets on Santorini, are they of a good standard, or does it suffer from the ability not to handle toilet paper being put down the pan, my wife was not impressed when she was told she had to bag it up and save it for collection, even worse when she was told that we would have to bring it home at the end of the week.

Villa Roula Perissa is our destination and I know that many of you forumers have been regular (sorry bad choice) visitors to this accomodation and we just want to go prepared if we need scented nappy bags etc...

Hi Foxprom, the sewage system throughout Greece and the Greek Islands cannot cope with paper being put down the loo, except possibly in some of the bigger towns and cities, so, yes, in Santorini you'll have to put the paper in a bucket by the loo. Don't worry, you'll get used to it and when you get home you'll be looking for the bin to put the paper in :wink

Hi Retsina,
:o Thanks for the response and information, I am sure we will cope with it. It just seems so stone age when you first hear about it.

We really are spoiled by our luxurious water and sewerage systems, (who would have ever expected seeing the words sewerage and luxurious in the same sentence)

Just got to stop the family wind-up merchants  now who are determined to send my wife round the bend about saving the paper etc..

Many thanks
Chris
