I suppose this depends on what 'really greek' means.

What would you all consider to be a 'really english' place?
Blackpool? Cheltenham? South Shields? Eastbourne? Tintagel? Brixton? Luton? Alderley Edge? Toxteth?

Might I suggest that everywhere you go wil be really greek. Even your presence - even in hordes - will not make it less greek, just different greek. You will never manage to dilute the essence of greece - though you may mess a particular place up a fair bit in the short term.

Think about it - or not.

well said patcar, I agree with you.
Perhaps Sallybear you should get all the holiday brochures you can find and a map of Greece and cross off any place that appears in the brochure.
I rememember replying to a previous post regarding Zante not being very Greek and saying that the people that live there do not consider themdelves any less Greek than people from any other area of Greece.
Some place cater more for tourists than others and that's not always a bad thing.

Hi

I agree with the posts suggesting places like Amorgos. They are a long distance away but that's precisely why they have fewer tourists. If that's what you are looking for, it is more than worth the extra few hours on a ferry which in many cases could probably be done while you are sleeping! Another options is Folegandros, which is the first Greek island I ever visited. Something else to bear in mind is the time of year you go. For example in the high season, places like Mykonos are crazy. However, if you go early in the year, say April or May there are likely to be few tourists about and the nightclubs etc will still be closed leaving only the Greek residents. You could try visiting during Greek Easter which will give you a really authenticate taste of Greece...lamb on spits, ouzo flowing, dancing...it's great. People forget that islands like Mykonos and Rhodes which are known for their resorts like Faliraki, have absolutely stunning countryside which they never see because they are tied to one place. You needn't go far either for something unspoilt. You can get to some spectacular places which are just a one and half hour drive from Athens such as the fishing villages on the coast on the Gulf of Corinth, which have very much an island feel. Also if you want an authentic experience try to get a Greek view by trying non-holiday related Greek websites and posting there (the ones which are in English of course).

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Emmanuel

i would recomend agistri, an earlier post quoted kosmar but they don`t fly into athens now you would have to diy using easyjet and bus to ferry port, not to expensive. it`s a long journey but worth it when you get there it`s a very relaxing resort. i prefered milos village to scala a bit more greek and we stayed at the boulas hotel has it`s own pool and great seaviews from every room, we ate at all the tavernas in the village but the hotels taverna was by far the best. kris is the owner and treets everyone well is cooking is fantastic free drinks wonderful view from the outside balcony. theres not many places i`d go back to but this is one of them, try it you will love it.

Would recommend Lesvos, this time last year we were there in fact! We stayed at Sigri which is a really small fishing village on the west coast , we found it unspoiled and relaxing. Lesvos is a big island with lots to see and lots of contrasting scenery, it is late to the party in terms of tourism but it does have an airport (an advantage if you are travelling with small fry) Prices were very reasonable and the people were extremely friendly and welcoming. Had some of the best fish I've ever tasted. Manos and Direct Greece do some very good deals in some of the less popular parts .
