Dancing bears

Hi Lesley Jane,

A trip to the opticians may be necessary, perhaps.........?

There was certainly a bedraggled bear being dragged along the road outside the Hotel Pomorie on at least three evenings last June.

A number of members of 'the oldest profession' were also rather obviously plying their trade outside the Europa.

Can't speak for the snakes or other reptiles............

Really ! I'm surprised about the bear.

Probably not about the ladies of the night, guess they are every where. I bet I wouldn't notice them, Not so the bear (I hope :? )

I thought the Bulgarian government really were trying to stop the bear dancing.

Right now where did I put that white stick 8)

Hi Champ,

The Bulgarian Government legislated against 'dancing bears' in 1993 but, like many laws in Bulgaria, the locals only tend to obey those that suit them.

Feel exactly the same as Champ on this one, I really hope I dont see anything like this becasue it would make me really upset. Havent even dared tell my sister because she would go absolutly mad as she feels really strongly about things like this.

the poor bear and various children led by a bloke playing an ethnic violin type instrument were observed from the rear of Stalag Kristal last June by ourselves, we closed the barrack door on them not wishing to show any interest. It wasn't pleasant.

As said above there must be tourists giving money for them to carry on - there's always at least one twit. Perhaps a word from the reps at their welcome meetings might educate the tourists who perpetuate this kind of thing.

We also saw this poor animal last year,as said in other postings on this topic the people with these bears can only make money if the tourists give it to them. Please do not give any money at all.

I can confirm that all of the above (bear, crocodile, snakes, lizards and ladies of the night ) are still there this season. :(

Have seen the dancing bears on several occassions over the years.
Last year, I was disgusted to see a family posing for a photograph. The bear was obviously very hot and cranky. It was trying to take a swipe at it's 'owner'.

My kids wanted to go an have a closer look, but after explaining to them the barbarity of it, they understood.
Unfortunately, it is the tourists who allow it to continue by paying to be photographed :(

hi there,
just got back and i did not see any bears, BUT my husband and daughters did (i think i may be as blind as lesley!) everytime they saw it i was in a shop (with my husbads wallet!) my daughter got very upset because she said it had a ring through it's nose with a metal lead and they were pulling it around.
good job i did not see it or i think the owner would have got a broken nose! i hate to see it.
the snake guys also got a mouth full off me when they through a snake around my 10yr olds neck and popped a baby croc in her arms took a pic and then wanted 10 lev for it. I went mad, not because of the money because the croc had it's mouth sealed with tape poor thing. Anyway my husband legged it to the first bar and left me because i was a bit loud!

Hi, been back 3 weeks now. Did see one poor bear a couple of times but no reptiles at all. As for ladies of the night - I can't have been looking hard enough!

Just got back after a week in sunny beach, luckily I didnt see the bear but saw crocodile and snakes, which had to run past otherwise they tried to put them on you!. Saw ladies of the night which tended to be on the front not far from Victoria Palace and a girl carrying a massive knife which i presume was for protection but quite scary!

Just back from Pomorie Hotel, I saw the bear go by at 7pm every night. It was heart breaking, looked so sad.
Also saw snakes, crocodile, and iguana.
I cannot believe they allow these animals to be around people.
Something needs to be done.

We were saddened to hear that people parade the streets with bears on chains for 'photo opportunities'. Do you see a lot of this in Sunny Beach?

Thanks 8)
