I have been asked been asked by our Turkish friend if we can bring bacon with us when we fly out next week. I thought he meant a few packs but he said as much as we can, 10 or 15 kg  I've already said no way can we take that amount as our luggage allowance isn't that big and don't want to use it all carrying bacon!! Is it ok to take lots of bacon? How do i transport it without it going off?

I've taken bacon over a few times, always well vacpacked, puti n suitcase at last minute, wrapped again in paper and a carrier bag, so stuff doesn't get damp. Never had any problems. Then I make sure whoever is having the bacon receives it soon after arrival.
Hope this helps

Ive carried bacon over as well (as well as butter, pork pies & sausages  )
i always freeze them, then pack them in foil & put into plastic re-sealable bags, they will keep cold thru out the journey that way.

Claire, don't want to risk freezing it as restaurant may want to freeze it. Don't want a load of people with food poisoning and it being my fault. Lofty do you just pack it with your luggage or wrapped? I don't really fancy doing the cool box bit as we are limited with space as there are 5 adults so all our luggage and 5 people in a people carrier going to the airport could be a squeeze.

As i put in previous post, double wrap it, and put in carrier bag, inside suitcase not frozen, the bacon not the suitcase!!!!

I don't think you are allowed to take meat stuffs out of or into other countries

I think there are laws concerning food export & import. I think meat, fruit, veg & flowers are restricted.

I usually bring t-bags, I find coffee usually nicer abroad 8) .

It's as cheap to eat out surely :D , anyway you're on holiday, time enough for being chained to the cooker when you're at home

I always look forward to a homecooked meal after 2 weeks away.

When we go self-catering, I still DON'T cook, I do enough at home, hubbie can treat me to a bit of respite from the kitchen when we're on holiday  .

Save up, eat out every day :D , you're on holiday after all !!!

ENJOY :P

You are not allowed to take Bacon into Turkey - but lots of peeps do, usually for expat friends and local restaurant owners. Though my friends who have a restarant in marmaris told me that there is now a bacon/pork supplier there this year.

Thanks for the advice. Have bought some bacon today but didn't realise how heavy it would be :o My daughter works as cabin crew and says i'd better hope the vac doesn't burst  Knowing my luck i will go through all this only to have it confiscated. Kimevans, i'm not taking the bacon for myself i have been asked by a Turkish friend to bring it for his restaurant. I too always eat out on holiday.

Yes apparently there is a supplier of English or should I say Danish bacon in Icmeler. But, I was told by the owner of appartment it was 14 pounds a kilo.
No wonder you only get one very thin piece on breakfast.

this year we took bacon and butter. You can buy large cool bags from pound land. I froze mine and put in cool bag in case with a blue freezer block. It was still frozen solid when I arrived ! If you are taking for friends or resturants,,, don't freeze it. Chilled and Vacuum packed will be enough.

As someone mentioned before, eggs and bread are very cheap over there. Don't start me on the fruit and Veg ,,, Its huge and so much flavour. Apples the size of grapefruits ect... Yummy... Don't forget to wash your fruit before eating though

We make a trip to Migros supermarket in Marmaris at the begining of our stay and are always amazed at how in-expensive the food is compared to our supermarkets. Also the clothes and footware in Migros is on a par with Asda george or Tescoe's prices. They sell some lovely serongs, tops, T-shirts and sandels. Cheaper than on the Market and a lot better quality. I had a lovely pair of sequined flip flops for a couple of Lira :D

We also get our Turkish Delight from the little confectionery stall at the rear of Migros. You buy it in weight and the only down side is it doesn't come in fancy gift packaging but in plain plastic box's, although I think they do do gift wrapping ??? It is much fresher than some of the little shops and Market stalls cos it is made fresh and is stored in an air conditioned enviroment.

A trip to the Migros for us is almost a daytrip in itself :!:

Hi all
I am in a bit of a dilema and hoping that all you good people can help.
We are going to Turkey in May, taking my 83 year old mother and my aunt who is 76.
we are going self catering and this is where the problems start!
We have been to Turkey several times and enjoy Turkish food. My mother came with us last year and will try anything once, she is quite adventurous but my aunt (who has never been before) is a totally different matter. She suffers with IBS quite badly and has to watch what she eats, in fear of triggering an attack. She can't eat salads and most veg is out of the question. She does not like chicken much either, (lets face it, chicken is on the menu everywhere you go in Turkey) and not keen on pasta etc.
Now, my question is, what food stuff can we take with us, so that she can at least enjoy some meals while we are away?
I know we are not allowed dairy products but can you take canned meat?
Yes, we do know we have to watch the weight of anything we take with us.
Any suggestions would be a great help.
Many thanks
mibur :D

How about steak and chips, jacket potato, rice,

I really wouldn't bother taking too much food with you as most of the supermarkets stock just about anything they do at home, well I know that the one in Icmeler does.

Where abouts in Turkey are you going?

I know you are not allowed to take any meat or dairy produce - But everyone does. I regularly take packs of vac packed bacon over for friends and it traves quite well. Likewise a couple of blocks of cheddar do ok

If salad, chicken, pasta & veg are no no's - What does she eat?? You could take cupa soups which are relatively light - eat with the delicious bread you get in any of the many markets.

You can buy sliced cold meat in Tansas/Migros etc - Usually Chicken & Turkey - So she would be ok for sandwiches if she eats them? Tins of tuna are also readily available

You can get kelloggs & nestle cereals over there - Corn flakes and such like - Does she eat these??

Hope her intolerances dont spoil your holiday,We had a similar experience with my nan a couple of years ago - it was a right pain for her and us  Good luck Mibur, me thinks you will need it

Mibur,

Firstly, I hope I am still going to Turkey at that age.. wow ! I can see where you are coming from with regards to food though. We usually take in packets of soup, you know the Knorr pkts that are very thin and you just mix with water, that with the lovely Turkish bread goes down a treat at lunchtime for me. The good lady wife also takes in the slim packets of cold meat out of M&S, neither of these items weigh that much (just had a thought .. hope I am not advertising ..). You don't say where you are going but if you are anywhere in Marmaris there are two very large supermakets (Migros & Tanzas) where I'm certain you will find food your Aunt can eat, they are just like big Asda's (Oh no .. more advertising). For other resorts somebody on here will give you other recommendations. In closing no matter where you go in Turkey the restaurants aim to please, take some time to explain the problem and I'll bet they come up with a solution for you.

Wilson
