Hi,
I'm staying in a cottage in Beckermet later this year! Has anyone been? Is it a nice walking area of the lakes? how close to the beach is it?
Any info would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Beckermet's a nice village with two good pubs and handy by car for the remote western parts of the Lake District like Eskdale. Try the Ravenglass - Eskdale narrow gauge railway - great. Great pub and food at Santon Bridge (Bridge Inn) on way to Wast Water. The area is quiet and sparsely populated because it's so remote but the scenery is stunning and so much more peaceful than the more accessible eastern part of the Lakes.
Your only problem is that Beckermet is literally next to Sellafield Nuclear Power Station so people tend to stay away from the beach! The Power Station does a free tour which you may find interesting. St Bees, further up the coast is a great liitle place with a lovely beach. Whitehaven, further up still has a nice harbour and in summer there's often something going on. They have a huge maritime festival every two years but I don't know if this is the right year.
Hope you'll enjoy West Cumbria - take a good anorak!!

Sorry Jo - I forgot to tell you to go to Muncaster Castle. They are a bird sanctuary and rescue all sorts of injured and abandoned birds, owls in particular. At 2pm (I think) every day several owls do flying demonstrations outdoors. Herons call in at 5pm to be fed. There are very attractive grounds and views and the castle is interesting too. It's a really good day out!
Hi Jo,
Roma is right about the Maritime Festival in Whitehaven and it is on this year on the weekend of the 25th/26th June.
Beckermet is a lovely little village, I'm sure you'll have a great holiday.
I live in the area so if you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll try to answer them.
