We flew to cologne and spent 2 nights there for the christmas markets. We had a brilliant time. Never thought of going to one in York.

Would be interested in reading somebodys comments on this.

Have been to the York one a few years ago - lots of craft/food stalls - nice but i found it very crowded - but no worse than your average town the weekends before Christmas!

Would book in advance and try for a hotel near the centre as the park&ride coaches get massive ques!

I live 30 mins from Worcester so tend to visit that one each year which is very good - again advance booking essential for hotels.

the york markets are fantastic, as are the shops, the nightlife is out of this world! definately to be recommended, it DOES get busy but thats normal at christmas anyway.

I've never been to the markets in York around Christmas, but York itself is a beautiful place to visit anyway.

Never been to either - We are looking at an overnight stay - any recommendations for a night out in either perhaps that could swing it Thats if we (a couple of 40 something sisters ) have got any energy left after shopping till we drop at the markets

What about the brilliant Christmas market in Bath? That is alot closer to you. It is held in the impressive shadow of the Bath Cathedral and the Roman Baths and is held late into the evening.
