I would recommend Garda Town.Lovely resort with a great atmosphere.Restaurants, cafes bars lining the lakeside.I've stayed at the Regina Adelaide right on the lake front.Excellent in every department but you need to pay quite a hefty supplement for a lake view room but well worth it.Unless you DIY Thomson are the only tour op who do it.
There is also another lovely 4* further back from the lake. The Villa Madrina.Very quiet and peaceful only 21 bedrooms.Plenty of room round the pool.
Thank you - I will check it out.
We've just got back from a two centre stay in Lake Garda - the first week was in Bardolino at the Parc Hotel Gritti, the second at the Europa Riva.
It was our first stay at the southern end and we fell in love with Bardolino - despite 3 days of rain --- really weird weather for Italy!
Will write a report re both hotels in the next few days as both were excellent.
Bardolino is in an excellent position to visit Garda - 3 kms along the lake side walk, Sirmione by ferry is about 30 minutes ride, and Lasize about 4 kms walk beside the lake. The town is lovely - the buildings amazing and there is a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
The hotel is excellent - there are no lake views from the rooms though BUT you are right on the lake side. The rooms have lovely inland or garden views - excellent and very quiet ----- from the pool you are a 30 sec walk from the lake and the views are stunning --- from a moon lit lake
to amazing sunsets. Many people we met from the UK who had stayed at a number of hotels locally said they thought it was the best, and it was full of Italians as well as British and German guests.
Bardoline though is worth looking in to
Thank you - Parc Hotel Gritti is one of the hotels that we liked the look of esp as we stayed at one of thei hotels in the north, We like to have a Lake View for my dad, but it is one to go on the list.
2 years ago in May we stayed in the Du Lac hotel Bardolino along from the Parc Hotel Gritti (looked great) . It was one of the best holidays we have had. I think I wrote a report on it (have a look). We hopped on the water transport every day and visited all the towns, it was wonderful. I am now planning for next May to go to Limone and see the north of the lakes.
The weather we had was, we've been told, VERY unusual for Italy for August. Even the Italians (locals) said that they had never known it to be so rainy for August. To be honest it was cold one day - but we still walked to Garda - and the hotel was so welcoming / the free tea and cakes very welcome that we survived! (When I say cold I mean about 18 degrees in the day).
Lake Garda does have stormy weather but it is usually a quick burst / lots of flashes and bangs - and then it settles. This year it was more unsettled - just look at what happened in Austria and Switzerland that weekend! This meant that the rain 'set in' for a few days.
The rest of the time, when it was overcast, it was very warm - you could wear shorts / t shirts and make use of a good brolly!
Hope this helps
Thanks to both of you. We went to Limone this year and the views are wonderful.
Hi, just be aware that the southern end of the lake is quite flat - rather like the sea, with some mountains in the background!
Hi just got back from Lake Garda yesterday. Stayed in Tomaso a little area at the back of Riva. We were only there for 4 nights as we went to the Lonigo Speedway Grandprix and thought we would stay on for a further 3 nights at Lake Garda in a cheapish hotel which was 3 stars. Although we didn`t have a lake view, the hotel was very nice with a pretty garden and a lovely swimming pool. It was also very clean and the owners were very friendly. Although I did feel you needed a car to stay in this area, as it was a long walk to the lake. Went to Riva in the evenings to eat out and it was lovely, atmospheric, very clean and very safe to walk around late at night. Also went to Limone which is smaller than Riva and very beautiful. The weather was very nice apart from Friday which was the day we arrived and it rained not stop.
We've been there twice - and as a rule our policy is not to return to the same place, once visited.
Thanks macalloa.
We are thinking of booking a hotel in Limone for Sept this year please can you advise me on approx temperatures at this time of year.
Many thanks
Lynn
