Hello!
After going to Turkey last year and having a fantastic time, we'd quite like to try Greece next year. Can anyone recommend a nice island to stay on?. We're looking for somewhere that has some local charm and culture but also some night life, ie restaurants and bars-we're not fussed about clubs! -a nice beach and prehaps also recommend a nice hotel. Many Thanks
Maybe you could try Pythagorion on Samos. That has all the qualities you require and if you get Turkey withdrawal symptoms, you can across there on a day trip.
Hi
Just returned on Sunday there from a fantastic holiday in Manousis Studios, Tsilivi, Zante.
It has to be the best holiday I've had. The brothers that run the place Sakis and Yiannis are just the most wonderful people. Friendly and very helpful..
I think that I will be going back again and again..... Clean, well maintained and good food... The greek nights with quiz are a must.

Would agree with valtosmythos about Pythagorion on Samos we`ve been for the last 2 years plenty of bars and some very good restaurants if you want disco`s there are 2 but these are down the back streets out the way
Kefalonia is our favourite Greek Island sounds like it has all you are asking for scenary out of this world not too touristy apart from Lassi as this was built for tourist, people so genuine and friendly not necessarily cheap but where is since the Euro has a few clubs but mostly bars, restaurants, for your evening entertainment, think most of the Ionian Isles are friendly but Kefalonia has something special for us, but we are in our 60's so it could depend on age.
I`d like to echo Kefalonia, in fact I can`t praise it highly enough, because it`s absolutely beautiful, with friendly people, lovely beaches, fantastic scenery, and some really good places to eat.
Kefalonia is lovely so is Skiathos although a bit more commercial.
What sort of things do you like?
Thassos was also a lovely island.
Look at the GREECE INSIDERS GUIDE AND LINKS at the top of the Greece Forum page it gives you a run down of all the islands etc.
Good luck
What part of kefalonia do you reccomend and are they 5 star hotels there
Hi Polar. Not sure there are any 5 star hotels on Kefalonia. Some friends stayed at the Mediterannee in Lassi (4 star) and thought it was excellent. Whatever resort/hotel you decide on, get a car and explore because Kefalonia is absolutely beautiful.
pojo
We stayed in Lassi near the Mediterranee Hotel (4 star) which looked really nice, right on the sea front. Lassi was rather quiet but we used to walk into Argostoli the capital where it was lively and had a large town square with lots of bars and restaurants.
Lassi was ok for a meal and a quiet drink. Not sure what the other resorts were like to stay in but we travelled around the island and they all looked nice and the scenery was stunning. The Kefalonia Palace in Lixouri is also 4 star, check out Porltand Holidays.
I think Kefalonia is more upmarket that most of the other greek islands, there are a lot of beautiful private houses and villas and the flora and gardens are amazing.
I would also recommend a look at Parga... German friends of ours have been there every year with two young daughters. who have been going there since the eldest was four!.... she is now 11 and always seem to have a good time. There is plenty of variation in accommodations, beaches, and eateries as well as self catering appts. maybe check out the website www. parga.com
It's been many yearrs since I went to Crete so I'm sure someone would have more up to date info than what I could give you.
We stayed in Agia Efimia on Kefalonia in September of last year - pebbly beach but very nice with lots of tavernas around the harbour. It's also a good base to explore the island. There's a dive centre and ferries run to various places from there.
My favourites over the years are still Thassos in the North, which is a working island with lots of archaeology, and Symi, which has the most beautiful harbour in Greece, together with some of the best restaurants and bars, most of which I know too well! Have a look at symivisitor.com, the English language newspaper.
We all have different tastes so take your pick and enjoy it.
Superb setting with a fantastic sunset and a picture postcard beach yet not too commercialised whilst retaining its distinct Greek feeling to the village amide a lovely array of irresistible restaurants.
Were ever you choose Enjoy.
Kos town in Kos perhaps
We stayed in Parikia (Sunset View Apartments) Salon D'Or is good for a beer and music adn there's lots of lovely tavernas. Hire a car and you'll find lvoely secluded beaches.

Me and my fella went to Kos (Kos town) last year and really enjoyed it. The beach's were lovely and the people friendly. There is a lovely harbour which lights up..... lovely at night time with all the shops and restaurants right next to it, really nice scenery.
As for the night life just a small square of small pubs really with no major night clubs that i was aware of but i am sure there are some around. I enjoy chilling in a pubs and get merry rarther than heavy night clubs so yeh not bad.
It's nice to rent bikes for the week and bike around looking at the scenery.
I would say 8 out of 10 for Kos.
Lesvos is an island blessed with a unique environment that changes from side to side, ancient volcanic actions has endow Lesvos the unique petrified forest at the dry rocky west part, instead of an olive silver and pine green rest part. But also a history through ages that we cannot leave unnoticed, monuments, evidences the existence of several cultures that has been established in the past of time. Ancient Greek temples, Roman aqueducts, pale Christian churches, Ottoman temples and buildings all well preserved and available for travellers who would like to combine holidays with history research. Lesvos is a place that can attract and entertain visitors four seasons a year. Popular sandy beaches with award winning crystal waters jointed with hotels for any taste, sea sports and jeep tours, romantic dinners under the moon in a traditional tavern next to the sea, all this and much more for the summer. Ecotourism and nature hunters for the winter, participation in preparing traditional products like olive oil, cheese and sweets in small cooperatives, hiking through paths, up on the hills and next to small waterfalls, healing baths in natural hot springs combined with family accommodations in small villages its sure that it will be a revitalizing part of life for each visitor. All the above making this island perfect for escape in nature and Lesvos safari tours has scheduled and prepared several tours and activities, for each season of the year guaranteeing an unforgettable time in a Greek traditional life in real.
Hi, I would recommend Grapevines Apartments, Alykanas, Zante. See my Hotel Report. You have got the option to go to the Greek Mainland and visit Olympia or do the overnight stay to Athens. You can also do the day trip to nearby Kefalonia. Zante is a wonderful Island with equally fantastic people.
