Yes, I stayed there year before last for a week with keycamp.
Wasn't a bad site.On the plus side there was a great waterpark and a small petting farm with animals and pony rides on site.The bar was good and there was reasonable entertainment for the kids.Good tennis courts,crazy golf etc... so certainly a good site for older children.
The standing stones were right outside of campsite entrance and bike hire was available on site.Shops were within a mile as well.
I was critical in some areas though. The pitches are all on sand/dirt and it's hell to clean the mobile home.My youngest was only three at the time and he resisted the long walk from the mobiles to the waterpark in the heat as it is a large site.The staff at reception knew little or nothing about local attractions/activities or more correctly couldn't be bothered to offer any advice or assistance.The keycamp funstations were full before quarter to ten and our older daughter could only get access on one day for the entire holiday.The lesson is be early or be disappointed.
After the first week we moved up towards Beg meil to the L'Atlantique campsite which is a perfect example of how a campsite should be run.

I took your advice on the le Ranolien this summer and had a great holiday there.
The only down side to the le ranolien were the staff as you've mentioned for the Camping la Grande Metairie

This I feel I could deal with.

However did you get to see many sights of interest and were the beaches as nice as around the le ranolien.

We're thinking of going for the first time with canvas as the kid clubs will suit the ages of both our kids.

If they get in of course.

Yes we've been here too a certain September a few years ago

the staff were friendly to all even before the 11th
w were in a tent (Eurosites then now Eurocamp have taken them over)

I do notice a lot of folk saying the sites pitches were sandy and it is difficult to keep clean (not just on this thread)

I'm afraid that this goes for 99.9% of sites abroad most of the pitches are sand very few are grassy, as they don't get the rain we do to get the green stuff to grow and the further south you go the hotter it gets the less grass can grow

That said it's simple to stop the stuff migrating inside by using a groundsheet just outside to take your shoes off before going inside.

Canvas have mobile homes with decking now which should help stop the dustiness feel to a pitch.

If you can get a mobile home with decking, then that will greatly improve the quality of life.As I say the important thing is the waterpark and that's very good.The beaches were nice but underwhelming, the weather wasn't great at the time but we did take a drive around the Quiberon penninsula and there were some beaches around there, my husband says they were nice!!! The weather wasn't great that particular week and the campsite was partly washed away by a very unpleasant storm.I should have also mentioned that the funstation was out of action as the tent was washed about 50 yards from where it ws meant to be So it wasn't just down to the club being full.
There's also a decent take away and shop so that's important.The standing stones are amazing. but they're fenced off and you can only see them from the roadway.
The campsite has everything the brochure says, but there was just something lacking in terms of atmosphere.It's hard to explain but I'm probably just very picky and awkward. So far I've stayed in four campsiites and I'd place it number 3.

There's not a lot to choose between Le ranolien and L'Atlantique.
Perros had the stunning scenery and a nice Breton feel to it.
l'Atlantique had the best kid's play area I've ever seen and direct access to a stunning beach and was perfectly laid out on large grassy pitches.(Poor entertainment though)
For 2006 I've booked le Clarys plage in St Jean and a week back in L'Atlantique.

These are the only sites I've visited so far.It's always been Brittany beacuse the children are still quite young and six hours is the max they'll tolerate on the drive down from Roscoff.(with a break or two along the way). Last year was the first time we went into the Vendee region with the Zagarella site.
Most of my friends and work colleagues do the French campsite holidays.
What I'm beginning to realise is that people's taste and requirements differ greatly.
Le Bois Dormant in St Jean gets good reviews.Le Palmyre Loisirs does not.(was described as the "Ryanair of campsites")
people with older kids like le Grand Metairie.
I must tell my friend Nigel about this site.He packs up his six kids and takes his own caravan around the Vendee and makes several stops at different campsites, up to five or six different sites each year.He says there are some excellent sites around Pornic and really likes the area.

We did Pornic as a stopover last year on the way back from Argeles got to agree loads there and the seafood is wonderful

Booked it guys and i'm very pleased

I've done a lot of research and feel the kids will love it.
