Depends where you go, but Greece isn't as cheap as it used to be. Still slightly cheaper than the UK though.

Blame the Euro - the Greeks do.

Yes, we went to Crete three years ago - the Euro had just come in and we thought the prices had risen quite considerably (paid £12.00 for a bottle of wine in a taverna) - does that mean that visitor numbers are down on what they used to be and if so do you think it will affect prices in order to lure people back.

This year saw our first ever visits to Greece...Corfu in June, and Rhodes in August. Corfu was definitely cheaper than Rhodes, but we were in a resort called Acharavi, which was, I beleive, exceptionally cheap! We could eat out, from the A la carte not the daily specials (which are there and are good value if you are on a budget), for around 28 euros evening meal, starters for 2 adults, main meals for 3 adults (11 year old son with us who now eats mainly from adult menu) plus 2 or 3 drinks (beers, metaxa etc). Fantastic choice and quality as well in lovely surroundings...we were well impressed . Pefkos in Rhodes had a bigger choice, slightly more expensive but was still reasonable. Unless you are travelling to one of the more upmarket resorts in Corfu, I doubt you will find it expensive. Have fun!

Hi Denyise,I think you will find that when the euro came into Greece as opposed to the Drachma,prices did rise considerably!But compared to a lot of other countries Greece still carries good value for money!

Yes,Rhodes is slightly dearer than Corfu,but there again I found Zakynthos cheaper.

It really does depend on what you want from a holiday.As someone else has said,you can eat"al a carte"and it may cost you a little more,or you can have "the specials"and it will be a lot cheaper!

Corfu is a wonderful place,the people are so friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

An example of a "special" sat overlooking the the Ionian Sea with a sunset to die for! was - 5 adult meals comprising of:3 starters,prawn cocktail,saganaki,and greek salads,2 massive steaks with all the trimmings!,Kleftico,and 2 chicken and mushroom dishes.All served with bread rolls and tzatziki!!We also had 3 desserts,comprising of a massive chocolate gateaux served with fresh cream and sparklers etc! A huge ice cream sundae and a dish of fresh strawberries and cream!!We also had 3 pints of Mythos,2 large bottles of water,a half carafe of wine and 2 ouzos.All this came to a grand total of 31 euros!!! There was also entertainment in the form of the singing waiters!!

What more can I say??!!

After travelling quite extensively over the last 20 years,and wanting to see a variety of places,and vowing not to go back to the same place twice,I chose Corfu 7 years ago,and have not wanted to go anywhere else!!! (been back there ever since!!)

I am sure that your first visit to Corfu will not be your last!!But wherever you go in the Greek Islands,you will have a welcome like no other.

Thank you very much for your replies - very useful. I've always had great holidays in Greece in the late 80's early 90's went to quite a few of the smaller Greek Islands eg Skiathos, Skopelos, Parga, Lefkas also been to Zante and really loved them all, but like I mentioned after going to Crete recently found the prices a little off putting especially as now we've two children to cater for ie cost of accommodation is a lot more expensive (as the basic studio for two people is no longer an option) a lot of the apartments are quite expensive when you add the room supplements on etc so the issue of spending money has to be taken into account (unfortunately). Am still seriously considering going back and would like to try Corfu. My first choice at the moment is Aghios Gordios can anybody give me any info/feedback about this resort ie if it still retains some Greek character etc. Many thanks again.

Denyse, I can't help with Agios Gordios specifically, but have you thought about booking your flights and accommodation separately instead of getting a package from a tour operator? It can work out quite a bit cheaper if there's more than 2 of you, because you can find apartments where you pay a fixed price for the accommodation itself and not for the number of people that are staying in it. My daughter and s-i-l had no problems travelling independently to Corfu with a 6 month old baby this September and we went on holiday to Greece that way when she was younger, so don't let the fact that you've got kids put you off.
