We were keen to hire a car for a couple of days in NIce, but all rental companies insist on a 300 - 500 euro excess. It was explained that if we had an accident which was our fault we would pay nothing, but if someone damaged our car( eg when it was parked & empty) we would be liable.
Also we would not be covered for tyres or windscreen, so eg if a stone hits the windscreen we would have to pay for the replacement.
I would happily pay another 20 euros or whatever per day for total cover instead of this hotch potch.
We have hired cars in other countries & have always been able to get fully comprehensive cover. Why not in France? When we were enquiring at one rental agency there was a party contesting the claims of the employee that their car had damage that meant that their deposit would not be refunded. They were adamant that no damage had occurred.
In the end we decided not to bother as the risk was too great.
