Guller,

kerela is a big place, where are you likely to be based? I did a quick search in Google and found these... I haven't read any of them so don't know how suitable they are.

Probably the best bet is to give to a small school in the area (I'd visit a couple first before giving, and then return to give so you can get an idea of the needs of each one. If you see children coming out from school and only a few have uniforms then this is a good sign that there are children from poorer familes as (at least in Goa) the familes have to buy the uniforms.

BTW. Kerala I think has the highest level of education in India most children follow on to goto college/uni.

Maybe you could do what we did and get a taxi into the state of Tamil Nadu (about 2 to 3 hours) and give your gifts out there. Tamil Nadu is a poor state and do not get many tourists so your spare rupees or whatever will be more than welcome to the local inhabitants. TTW

When I was in Kerala about 10 years ago our rep gave us the address of an orphanage and a school in the area, sorry I can't remember where they were, but I think only a short taxi ride away. If you can't find anywhere on the net before going ask your rep or hotel employees when
you get there. We were also asked by the rep at the end of the holiday to leave any medicines, toiletries etc., that we could spare.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions i will definitely follow them up . Its our first time to India but we are aware of the poverty in this country and feel we could do our little bit and i think it would be good for my daughter to give something from her class to less fortunate children it will be a good lesson to learn at an early age

At the end of our stay at the uday samudra beach hotel we was told a bout a woman whose husband had left her with a couple of children and who had also experienced a misfortune in her health, the locals had supplied a tempory shelter at the start of the main road into the uday samudra and was hoping that tourists would supply her things like hair shampoo or money etc that they was leaving behind at the end of their holiday in which i thought was a good idea and hopefully she will save egnouth money to buy permant housing.
