Hi all,
I'm staying in Gozo for one night on 9 June 2006 and can't decide where to stay. I've a few ideas but thought I'd work out where to stay depending on the places to visit. I'd like to experience some local culture and to visit some local restaurants and bars and was wondering which area or place would be best to stay? Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Alison.
to be able to answer you properly, can you answer the following
1. how old are you (or how old do you feel !), and are you coming with children ?
2. what standard/price range do you want in a hotel ?
3. can you drive/will you hire a car ?
4. what do you like doing on holiday - do you like swimming, walking, historical sites etc etc ?
as its only one day, and without answers to above, I would say
grand hotel, mgarr is best bet - http://www.grandhotelmalta.com/english/location.htm - near the harbour and lots of good restaurants, and can catch bus into Victoria
another choice, in victoria, a new hotel Downtown Hotel http://www.downtown.com.mt/
http://www.gozo.gov.mt/pages.aspx?page=En - is the best website for info
I stayed in a hotel on Gozo called the Ta Cenc a couple of years ago, it was really nice, lovely pools and all made out of the local stone. It had a wonderful breakfast terrace set out under a huge tree, really beautiful.
It might also be worth considering along with the ones mentioned by Gozomark.
Ta Cenc is a nice hotel (its in Sannat, my village) Its a bit isolated although there is an excellent restaurant just outside the hotel, called Il Girna - to my view one of the best restaurants in Gozo.
We ate in that restaurant a couple of times.
The hotel also has a courtesy mini bus thats takes you into Victoria(think it was every day but dont quote me on it ).Their mini bus will also take you to a local beach for the afternoon for a small price.
When we go back to Gozo we will definetly stay there again.
Hi doepsmc
all this talk of Il Girna made me decide to go tonight - will let you know if its still up to scratch
ooooo have some octopus and a bragioli for me Mark.
And me. (don't know what bragiol is, but it sounds better than shepherds pie which is what I'm about to have!) Enjoy.
wife had grilled octopus and veal with parmesan and proscutto
all washed down with some excellent Gozitan wine...........
Pippy you truly are the 'Queen of Links'. If I ever want to have a Gozo evening I know what to cook my friends.:D
Thanks for the info, very interesting!
Here's a bit of info about me, as asked earlier by gozomark.
(gozomark, do you live in gozo or are you just a big fan?)
1. I'm 29 and am not being any children as I don't have any (thank goodness!).
2. We would be wanting to get a single room for approf £50 each, think that's about 30ml.
3. I can drive - would you receommend a car?
4. On holiday I like seeing the sights and having a sociable drink in a local bar and just sitting and taking in the atmosphere.
I'm heading to Gozo with a friend after a friends wedding in Malta. We're staying one night and then are heading back to Malta for another few nights.
The Gozo website is great looking, I'll have to set aside some time to have a good look at it. There seems to be lots of archaeological and historical stuff to do. I also like the page on the bakeries! I'm a breadaholic and can't wait to go to try out some of the Gozo bread!
I'm getting all excited about it now!
Alison.
I'm both a resident (moved here 3 years ago) and a big fan
Lm 30 is a good budget ! at the Grand, even the superior seaview plus a single supplement only comes to Lm 32 odd incl breakfast - and thats at published prices http://www.grandhotelmalta.com/english/rates.htm (if you are here during the world cup, prices are likey to be lower)
whether you need a car depends on where you want to go, but should only be Lm8-10 of a day. - as I live here and have a car, I'm not the best for recommending who to hire a car from - sure someone else will help !
best bakery is probably in Nadur, best bars are Gleneagles at the harbour Cafe Jubilee in Victoria and Rosina's in Sannat (my local) - waits for disagreements from other forum members
check out the gozo website and let me know of any questions you have

Ciao Alison, if you like Maltese / Gozitan bread (Hobz in Maltese) then a great place to try it in Gozo (Ghawdex in Malti) is at a place called Ricardo's in the Citadel in Rabat his address is 4 Triq Il-Fosse (Fosse Street) very close to the cathedral, lunch consists of hobz, olive oil (Zejt) 2 kinds of Gozitan goats cheese (Gbejna) sun dried tomatoes, onions, and pickled articokes, fabulous lunch washed down with there dark home made red wine, we will be back next month and will be deffinitely stuffing our faces in Ricardos, out of interest where are you staying in Malta if it's Sliema then I will happily reccomend good places there.
nearly went to Rikkardo's today, but did the same lunch at home instead - top restaurant for lunch
Hi Mark, it sure is mate, I will be in Gleneagles one day next month do you reckon he will be open for an afternoon pint this time ?.
not if he knows you are coming
In which case I will disguise myself dressed as a police officer, they specialised in all day opening long before any government sanctioned it
