Yes, but they are just plain silly. :D

I call it BEEFA cos im a lazy northerner. :rofl

Please , please PLEASE do not call it EYE-biza.
We have that darn Lisa I'Anson and Radio One to thank for that - before that it was and always will be Ibiza (I as in FISH).
Anything else is just plain rude.
:D

Why is it rude? The French call their capital city Paree we say Paris I don't think we are regarded as being rude because we don't pronounce the word the same way as they do.

I dont think its rude either, not really bothered about how other people pronounce it, its good to be different.....

The pronunciation of "eye.bitha" came about with Radio One! Before that everyone called it I-bitha which is correct. the B is soft and the z is a "th". That Lisa I'Anson has a LOT to answer for!!!!!
Reply
'I' is pronounced as in 'it'
'B' is as in barcelona
'Z' is 'th'

Therefore, Ibitha i reckon and not Ibeetha.

You say potato I say potahto, lets call the whole thing off!

Quite like the beefa pronounciation myself. :P

I have no idea who Lisa I'Anson is as I have lived in Germany for the past 35 years but my mother had a holiday in Ibiza in 1974 and she pronounced the island Eyebeetha at the time, I remember clearly telling her she was pronouncing it incorrectly. Was Lisa I'Anson on the radio in 1974?
Reply
Yep "Eyebeetha" is the correct Catalan pronunciation for it, "ibiza" is the english translation.

It has nothing to do with Lisa I'Anson!!! I'd heard it called Eyebeefa way before that uncovered program!

So she doesn't have a lot to answer for really does she?

It's just the different ways people say things!!!

It's like saying 'Germany' is wrong because thats def not how the German's say it!

Oh dear. Sense of humour failure all round.
