The circus has left Mapusa, It might have gone down to Margao now... But I don't know. It was her in Mapusa for 3 or 4 weeks I think and left maybe two weeks ago, yeah, we took a group of kids to see it, it was good, and they seemed to enjoy it...

We went to the circus. We paid top whack (100 ruppees!) for best ringside seats. I can only imagine the circus is what a british circus may have looked like in the 1930's. In fact, I think Billy Smart may have sold his equipment and costumes to this lot when he replaced them shortly before the war. I imagined the audience (no other tourists) would be going mad with excitement but they seemed as bemused as we were.
To be fair, we got a good two and half hours entertainment and the skill and bravery of the acrobats/cyclists/etc etc was awesome. It was awful though seeing the animals. They had dogs, elephants, birds, horses, ponies. I got the feeling both animals and humans were being exploited; even the clowns looked sad.
The circus has moved on...someone told me they are from the jungle. There were two artistes from England as well when we watched it.
I wouldn't really reccommend a visit.

Hi
We went to the circus twice about 3 years ago in Mapusa taking a couple of the hotel staff with us each time on their days off. They absolutely loved it and so did we as Janeywhit said 100 ruppees for front row seats and it lasted about 2 and a half hours.
The animals were the only downside, they had a gorilla chained inside a little train which circled the ring at the end of the show, if was very scared looking.

We went in Mapusa, too - about 4 years ago. It was in late November, I think. Agree with previous comments.

It was quaintly old fashioned but you need to overlook (and I couldn't!) the lions in cages that weren't big enough to let them turn around in. Apparently, the authorities banned lions from participating in the circus so they just kept them caged up all the time.

Loved some of it, was appalled by other bits.

Friend went with family to circus when based in Panjim in January. Only comment was that her family enjoyed it but she thought the dogs looked scared, old and tired and this put her off. Most people seem to making the same sort of comments about the animals in their posts.
