My husband and I were in Port Elizabeth, SA for Christmas and New Year and we decided to try somewhere different for a couple of days. We went up to Zululand and stayed at Fugitive's Drift Guest House. What a fantastic time we had! We went on 2 battlefield tours up to Isandlwana in the morning and to Fugitive's Drift in the afternoon where you learnt about particularly famous battles in the Anglo-Zulu wars.
I must admit that even though I used to live in SA, my historical knowledge was very limited, but this was absolutely fascinating. My husband loved every minute of it and wanted to stay for longer! We were there for 2 nights and it was 2 nights of luxury. We had flown to Durban from PE for £80 each (booked directly with SAA on their website) and then hired a car from AVIS (again, booked through a website costing only £75 for 3 days with unlimited mileage). It took us about 3.5hrs to drive - it is a big country!!
It has certainly given us a taste for something different. The owners of the lodge also have another lodge within the battlefields area and that one specialises in the Anglo-Boer war, so that's another one we'd like to try sometime.
I thought that this might be interesting for those of you who wanted to do something different, not necessarily the safari option which one always presumes one needs to do when visiting the country.

just noticed your post. We had hoped to go to Durban/Cape Town this Easter but flights didn't work out for us . Since then I have done more finding out and am beginning to think that if it is a choice between Cape Town or Durban I would choose Durban. I would love to tour the battlefields. It would be great to hear more details!
I have to admit that I would choose Cape Town over Durban any day! But that's just me. We booked the guest lodge through Trailfinders and as I mentioned before, just sorted out our own flights and car hire. However, you can book directly through the lodge. Just do a search for Fugitive's Drift Guest House and it'll bring it up for you as well as give you background to the house itself.
There is the Guest House and the Lodge which are owned by the same family and they are only about a minute's walk away from each other. Both have swimming pools and both are full-board. You only pay for drinks from the bar with your evening meal.
The trips to the battlefields are fantastic. You have various guides telling you different stories - there were two jeeps when we went, about 12 of us in total, so a nice small group. There are other trips you can do as well such as horse-riding to other sites. We didn't have the time to do this though.
I would like to do the Anglo-Boer trips too as I remember a bit more about them from my history lessons!
If you need any other info just drop me a line.

thanks Gill. I hope we get there some day!
