Hi all,
Just got back from a 2 week stay in Baga. I just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone who has posted on this site as their contributions allowed me to be well prepared..as a result I settled in quickly and had a great time.
I also wanted to quickly mention a few things to other first-timers. Probably common knowledge to regular Goa addicts but useful for novices like me.
1. Indian rupees. These can be purchased at the airport before you fly out..not the best rate...I was offered 65 rupees to the pound.
2. Monarch flights. After reading bad reports I'm glad to say that the flight wasn't that bad at all. Flew in one of their new Airbus A330's. Paid £60 for the extra legroom seats which made a big difference. The only down side was constantly being barged into by people walking up and down the aisle. Didn't get much sleep because of this. My advice..ask for a window seat.
3. Baga Road. Please be extra careful when walking down this road. After check-in I went for a walk and had to dive through a shop doorway to avoid being hit by a stray moped after its driver and passenger went flying. Take your time and be extra cautious.
4. Baga Beach. If you find it too crowded walk further North up the beach. This part of the beach is popular with indian tourists but still isn't as crowded..there were less beach sellers and the shacks had security who would watch your belongings while you went for a swim. Try the area opposite a shack called 'The Two Sisters'.
5. Anjuna. If you feel up to it take the time to follow the path to Anjuna beach. It's hard work in the heat but well worth doing...and there's a small shack on the route if you need to stop for a rest.
Thanks again!
Neil
Glad you had a good holiday, it goes to show that doing your research really pays off. The big question is.....would you return??
Goldenflipflop xx
Nice one Neil all the advice and help makes our holiday that more enjoyable especially up to the minute advice from people like yourself, cant wait to get there and see it all for myself.
Yes GF, I would go back but whether I'd stay in Baga again I can't say...would probably try somewhere else. I heard a lot of good reports about Candolim while I was out there and also saw some nice hotels/apartments when I crossed Baga Bridge. Would definitely spend more time at Mandrem, that's for sure!
No probs AL38. I just mentioned the things that were on my mind before I flew out. I forgot to mention torches..always carry one with you in the evenings. I used the toilets at a cafe one night and there was a powercut just at the wrong moment...luckily Mr Magilite saved the day!
Cheers
Neil
Most people go to Anjuna in the mornings. We always go in the afternoons around 1600 hours. It is cooler and much less frantic with less hassle from "shop owners". We also find the prices much better. The benefit is that it closes around 1730 so less time for my wife to spend our money!!!!!!
