Visited there about eight years back. Its like other fishing villages in the far east..plenty of live produce to see...a labyrinth of little streets and lots of old folk sitting around. It is in complete contrast to Hong Kong as is Lantau island. The Po Lin monastery is great we went with a very knowledgable(sp?) guide. The vegatarian meal served by the monks was very good. Great views over the islands from the statue of Buddha.
We were thinking of not having the vegetarian meal and taking the bus instead into the village. We also have other plans for when we back to Hong Kong that day. ( We seem to be doing what I promised we would not do the next visit to Hong Kong- trying to pack too much into each day!)
There might be a lot of construction work on Lantau Island at the moment because they are building "The Journey of Enlightenment" which is a 5.7km cable car ride from near Hong Kong airport to a culturally themed village next to the Giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, its supposed to be finished mid 2006
I had no idea. Hope it doesn't spoil things.
