Congratulations to your friend John Mizzi!
In his letter of support to you in the Times, I was pleased to to see he mentioned foreign residents. Before 1994 I didn't have a vote because there were no local councils, and obviously as Malta was not in the EU no European elections. At general election time the candidates would still knock on my door, but everyone one of them would quickly move on when they discovered I was not Maltese without even a "Pleased to meet you," or "Is there anything you would like to talk about?"
Best of luck to him.
AD were the only party in Sannat who bothered to produce any election pamphlets in English - fair enough, we are guests in this fine country, but the foreign vote is very important here - we may only be a few percent, but most elections here are very close. Of the 140 odd votes John got, I would estimate 50% were foreigners, and he only made it by 20 odd votes over the next best candidate - his letter of support to me in The Times swung atleast that many that I know of !
What has this got to do with a golf coarse in Gozo, well if our country has not got much water at this time of year, just how could Gozo cope with the water that is needed to keep a golf coarse green in your summer?
Dave
yes, the lack of water is one of the main problems with a golf course in Gozo - already over half of water consumed is produced from sea water, which uses alot of electricity - if a golf course paid the full price for its water, the cost would be around £10 per round of golf paid - thats for water alone !

"Declare Ta Cenc a national reserve" - its a very well thoughtout letter - The owner of Ta Cenc, Victor Borg, called the woman who wrote it and told her not to interfere with Gozitan life (thats a polite and shortened version of the conversation) - it seems Victor Borg has a new best enemy ! (atleast he didn't try and ban her like he did me)
had a wonderful walk this morning up at Ta Cenc - its so beautiful at the moment, with all the flowers and greenery

If Malta needs another golf course shame it cannot be built at Maghtab. Not only would it actually be an improvement, but close to most of the existing 5 star hotels - Baypoint, San Gorg, Marina, Intercontinental, Dragonara, Hilton and the new St. Julians Meridian.
But then again you may like to know what I saw when I was there, I went over to see my Grandson who was 5 years old last weekend and look at my Daughters new villa, by the way we got flights with Monarch for £128 for two. Any way as we drove from Malaga air port to Banhavas along the main highway, the one thing that stood out and was not a very nice thing to see for me was that there was one golf course after another and what with all the new building work going on, I cannot see why any body would wish to live in this part of the world, unless they are golfers of course.
So is one golf course bad, perhaps not but if like in Spain once you have one and it goes down well, then will they want another and more hotels and then some villa's and so it goes on and before you now it you have a mini Spain ('OH' no) and a way of life gone for good.
Well thats me,
Dave.
Hi Dave, if you only just got back yesterday then that really was "a long weekend" .
Did I miss your last report from your last visit, I would like to know more about Vince's restaurant E;G prices for a meal for two with a good bottle of wine.
All the best,
Dave.
Hi Dave, glad you enjoyed your extra long weekend mate, no you haven't missed my report on our latest visit to the magic isle as I am yet to do it but I will do (one day soon), the price for a meal for two in Il-Merill would be in the region of about 9-16 LM depending on what you have, if my fuzzy memory serves me right main courses are between 3-5 LM and a good bottle of Delicata or Marsovin is I think approximately 3LM although the local house wine is sourced from vineyards in St Paul's bay is very good indeed, in Il-Merill you are garunteed very nice local food freshly prepared every day to traditional Maltese recipes and cooking styles, the owners are very welcoming and extremely friendly and the restaurant itself gleams with cleanliness, all in all a visit to Il-Merill is always a very worthwhile and very reasonably priced experience we should know we have been many many times and have never ever been disapointed, hope this helps but as always feel free to ask as many questions as you like regarding the menu etc or indeed about Sliema in general.
