Yes Jules, you're right PP is a great spot. We stayed there years ago and had a great holiday. I'd been put off Majorca due to the traditional image of the southern resorts, but PP is a quieter resort and suited us down to the ground.
We used the local bus service to go into Pollenca(only about 5 miles inland) and it was very good. This town is definitely worth a look. But then we chose to hire a car and rental is not expensive in Majorca so we opted for a week. (didn't use the car every day but it wasn't much more than the cost for 3 days)
Driving is no problem and we enjoyed the freedom to explore: Formentor, Cala san Vincente (both on your doorstep). Then we went to the fabulous Soller, Puerto Soller, Deia & Valdemossa, non of which you should miss. You'll be amazed by the beauty of this island especially near the mountains. One lovely experience is the old train from Soller to Palma.
You can tell how much I enjoyed it all, in fact we've booked a week at Hallowe'en this time in Port Andraitx in the south for a different perspective of this fab island!

Sorry guys but Puerto Pollensa after all the non-stop building work is IMHO much overated, once you have walked along the Pine Walk you have seen it all.

The biggest curse though is if you hire a car finding parking in that place is impossible in the summer months. If you have not yet made your booking I would suggest you look at the Playa de Muro or Playa d'Alcudia. You can find full details of accommodation on many web sites but http://www.escape2majorca.com seems to specialise in this area.

I think hiring a car is a great idea, it is a beautiful island and my favourite area is the north east around Arta. If you hire a car use one of the major rental companies, the local ones have had a very bad press here lately.

If you are determined to stick with Puerto Pollensa then try the restaurant Ca'n Cuarassa, it is on the road from Puerto Pollensa to Alcudia. A superb three course meal with wine coffee etc is under £20

Am afraid I can't disagree more re the suggestion to go to Playa de Muro instead - there may be a good beach & some nice hotels there but not much more. You've made a great choice choosing Puerto Pollensa.

We've NEVER had problems parking in Pto Pollensa & go several times a year including Jul/Aug. The central Marina car park can get full but there are 2 more specifc car parks plus easy road parking behind the Pine Walk & in other side roads.

But yes you can visit losts of great places without needing a car - last year's bus timetables are here

There are so many different restaurants within the port itself as Can Cuarassa is out on the road towards Alcudia.

Well I'm off to Puerto Pollensa for the first time in August, after reading reviews and viewing photo's of the place I don't think we have made a mistake in booking. Friends of ours visited there last year and said how beautiful it was and they wouldn't hesitate in going back.

My Dad went a few years ago and according to him there's nothing there! I knew straight away I'd made the right choice as we both look for totally different things in a holiday

It's all down to personal choice at the end of the day but you'll never know if you'll like it or not if you don't try it

I think I've made the right choice for us too.

I don't know whether either of us will drive, but it's good to know we can use public transport just in case.

i stayed 2 nights in p.p. but couldn't wait to get back to magalluf. everything shut at midnight!. and in the day as has been said before once you've walked the pine walk thats it!. then again my sister in law loves the place and is going there again with her family , the kids loved it.

I find the same with most reviews - good and bad - take them all with a pinch of salt. Other than people with something to sell, I do not believe there is any intent to deceive, it is just that everything is in the eye of the beholder.

I am an old age pensioner, and have been retired for over ten years. I first came with my wife to Majorca in 1965. I bought a property in 1988 and feel truly saddened to see the development and how it has ruined the likes of Puerto Pollensa and Pollensa.

The only town which seems to have gained is the old walled Town of Alcudia. This has for the most part been pedestrianised (if there is such a word) and very large car parks have been built outside the walls, making it an easy place to visit.

Many people rave about the fact you can get good fish and chips in Puerto Pollensa but is this what you come over here for? I can vouch for the fact it does have one of the best dentists on the island though!

Seriously, if you want a recommendation get it from a friend whose views you normally share, not from web-sites trying to entice you to buy property, or from unsolicited reviews on various web sites as these prople could have totally different likes and dislikes to your self.

Many rave about Saturn Jupiter and Mars complex - no amount of money would persuade me to stay there - but to others it is all they are looking for.

I agree Pushkin we all have different likes and dislikes especially when it comes to holidays but I still think getting reviews from sites such as this play a big part when deciding to book a holiday, well for me anyway

I think you can actually read between the lines of reviews to know whether the hotel/resort sounds like your idea of heaven or hell, I have also read reports on the Saturn Jupiter and like yourself it wouldn't be for me but each to their own without sites such as this to give us these reviews we would never get to find out what hotels or resorts are like and could go ahead and book our worse holiday nightmare.

i went to pp 2 years ago and it has no doubt changed over the years it is one of the prettier resorts on the island altho we went in may/june and it was v quiet in terms of any nightlife. it is however at the top of the island and i think you will need to hire a car to see many of the places but do not be put off by driving out there once you have mastered the roundabouts it is pretty easy

but couldn't wait to get back to magalluf

If you like Magalluf then you will **definitely not** like Puerto Pollensa, and vice versa. Vive la difference !
