I have heard that we have to declare how much money we take into Tunisia.
What I was wondering was, is this true and if so how would I find out how much.
I am going for one week AI, but want to do trips.
I don't know where you heard that but it simply isn't true. The only restriction is that you can only get Tunisian dinars when you get there and you can't take them out with you when you leave, so anything left over should be changed back into sterling at the airport. You can change money at your hotel, any bank, or at the numerous ATMs. The rate of exchange is set by the government so it doesn't matter where you change your money. It is advisable to keep the receipts for your records as if you need to change it back on the way home you will need to show at least some of them - in theory they will only change back a percentage of what is shown on your receipts but they aren't too harsh on this. Just don't change up more than you need into dinars at the end of your holiday.
I remember seeing a sign at Monastir airport when we arrived a couple of weeks ago about declaring any currency being brought in . But no one was taking any notice of it and and no one was being asked to declare any currency . We only had sterling travellers cheques so i dont know whether that counts ? With regard to the Dinars, we used any spare that we had left at the end of our holiday to help pay off our hotel bill. We were asked several times when we left if we had any dinars remaining but you are actually allowed to take upto 8 dinars per person through to the departure lounge as there are cafes there that will take them.
You will also often get asked by the bell-boys at the hotel if you can change sterling for dinars as they sometimes get tipped in sterling and the hotels won't change it for them as it is coins. I always tell them to wait until the end of the week as it can be a useful way of getting rid of anything left over - they accept a rate of 2 dinars to £1, though it is actually a bit more than that. Incidentally I didn't know we were allowed to take 8 dinars out. I do remember one lad in the hotel who kindly offered to look after any money I had left over until I came back next time - strangely enough I declined.
I'm sure he would have takn good care of your money till you got back.
Thanks everyone for your reply.
