mayfair hotel

Hello there. I have posted questions with regard to the Mayfair, and I had some replies, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get back to them! However, there was one lady who was going there in May and she said that she would write about it when she got back, so I'm keeping my eyes out for it.

Was there anything in particular that you wanted to know about? And when are you going?

I was concerned myself about reports on the "older accommodation" so I sent an e-mail directly to the Mayfair and they replied telling me that this part had been refurbished for this season.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Jim, how wonderful to be living in Paphos!

When you say give it a miss, do you mean for any particular reason other than the area it is in? I have read that the area leaves a lot to be desired, but am hoping that the accommodation, etc. will be acceptable now that it has been upgraded. Have you ever been inside the complex?

All of this, of course, is a bit late, because we are already booked to go late July, but we hope to have a good time in such a lovely part of the world.

It would be really good to hear any other comments, recommendations, etc., from someone like yourself who must know the area inside out. Do you think that the area is safe to be walking around at night?

Cheers!

p.s. it is cold and dull over here in the UK, hope the Cyprus weather is better!

Piglet, I am sure Jim will reply fairly soon, but I believe you have to be careful at night in the area.

Oh dear! Now I am starting to worry. We do seem doomed to choosing the wrong accommodation approximately every other year, even though I do so much homework beforehand! I would be interested in what people mean by being careful in the area at night, are we talking attacks? Oh dear, my imagination is just running away with me now!

I have read reports ranging from the downright awful (only found after booking of course!) to the wonderful. The majority of the bad comments were to do with the un-refurbished areas of the hotel, which I hope have been resolved. We really only want a clean base to enable us to enjoy the area, but obviously want to be safe.

We wouldn't be coming back late at night, normally before 10. We tend to go out to eat and then come back to see what entertainment the hotel has to offer. I have already heard about the ladies of the night in the area, wonder if this is true, although I don't suppose they are the problem if it is true, its more the people they attract into the area. I have read several times that there are a lot of Russian immigrants in the area as it is a residential area but that they are no problem. If we get too worried, I suppose there are always taxis. I won't mention any of this to my husband or daughters, they will worry to death. I do hope this isn't one of those holidays where you want to come home as soon as you step foot inside the hotel. I am eagerly awaiting the report from the site member who is going in May (which starts tomorrow can you believe?)

Cheers!

p.s. I have just been onto Jim's site again, its very good and well worth a visit if you are going to visit Paphos, although I would stop before you read the section on the spiders if you are the tiniest bit scared of them! Something else to haunt me!

Kath is correct but the hotel is ok just,(nice pool area) I would have chosen a different hotel but hindsight is a wonderful thing, I am sure you will be fine and enjoy your stay..

The weather here is just perfect at the moment, warm (not hot) and fairly sunny, we have had another lovely day here..low 70's with partial clear conditions, not expected to change until late December.. :)

Thank you again Jim, it is very kind of you to take the time to reply. Have you seen my other post just prior to yours?

Am so glad the pool area is nice, that is one of our top priorities as that is where we spend nearly all day when we go somewhere so hot. We know that it is not top class, but if its clean, we are happy!

This information has been gratefully received, and we will just take that extra bit of care when we are out and about at night. Now the question is, do we leave our valuables in the room safe when we go out at night, or do we take them with us? Two years ago in Portugal we went out to eat for no more than an hour, and our room safe was stolen from the wall, and wheeled out in one of our suitcases, containing everything of value, and I mean EVERYTHING. Swore blind since then that we would keep everything in our possession. Thanks again.

Cheers! Although I suppose we had best get back into saying Yammas!

p.s. when I go onto your Paphos site, and click on the webcam at the top of the page, I get a building site. Would just be my luck for that to the view from our hotel window? Ha! Ha!

hi there went to visit the mayfair last month as we are booked to go there at the end of june, the staff were really helpful and friendly, and let me have a look around they even give me a key to have a look at the 2 bedroomed apartment.
there was a large lounge witn 2 single beds diningroom table a chairs kitchen area,2 bedrooms bathroom and 2 balconys with patio table and chairs,a really good size.
the pool area was really nice, spoke to some people round the pool they who were staying there and they said that they had no complaints, one of the apartment blocks had been completly gutted out and were in the process of getting done up.the area surrounding the hotel looks a bit run down
as you come out the front door of the hotel there is the mayfair taxis at the end of the road
if you walk up the lane at the back of the apartments it takes you to a large supermarket with a large foodstore and a dorothy perkins
Across the road from the hotel is the full moon pub which does a delicous full cooked breakfast for £1.99 (yummy)
All in all, if your looking for a medium priced hotel/apartment you could do a lot worse than the mayfair

Sorry to have alarmed you Piglet, just thought that forewarned is forearmed.

I am sure after reading Jims post and that of CCC64, you will be fine.

No problem, Kath, you didn't alarm me at all, please don't worry about it! :D

I had already read other comments about the area, so knew to expect something less than wonderful with regard to the immediate area when we got there. And you are absolutely right, forewarned is forearmed, and that it what makes this site so good, it has the capability to give you all the right information to help make your holiday better.

Thank you so much ccc64 for your really informative post, I hope that trueblue gets to read it. It was especially helpful to have directions to the supermarket, etc. I have heard so many good comments about the Full Moon Pub that I think it would be rude not to try it out for a full brekkie!

I sometimes think that I worry too much about things, but as I said before, we have had more than one holiday where being forewarned about certain things would have been a blessing!

Enjoy your holiday in June ccc64!

Piglet...the area is notorious the hotel is reasonable just don't hang around in the street late at night..The Mayfair is in Kato Pafos part of town so building work is not a problem

That building site is typical of many village areas of Cyprus, they are over developing Cyprus no matter where you live, you just cant get away from it, by the way that webcam is bolted to the side of my bungalow, I used to have an uninterrupted view towards those mountains..

One of the reasons for the expense of that camera was to show first the local weather live, second to show that complex being stage built, if nothing else it will give those live shots some interest to those many thousands of wanabe ex-pats some idea of life here...not just a beach scene..

Have a great holiday..

Hi Jim!

Thanks for all the info, we won't be hanging around the streets late at night, so I am sure we will be ok. If we get worried at all, we will use taxis.

It is a shame you have had your beautiful view obscured. We came to Cyprus in 2001 and saw so many partly built houses. We reackon that if we were to go back to the same places, some of them still wouldn't be finished! It was a similar thing in Zante.

I shall dip into your Cyprus forum now and again, it is really interesting. I am just hoping that we do not see any animal cruelty when we come over, it would break our hearts.

Yammas!

Mayfair is about 15 minute walk across a busy duel carriageway to the harbour area... the reason for the problems is many workers from the Eastern parts of Europe and the ex-Russian states live in that area, the poor chaps have nothing to do but get blitzed on cheap local vodka, local news papers often report trouble there, it is unfortunate it was a nice residential area thirteen years ago.. my daughter used to have an apartment just over the road from the then new hotel..and in fact was a rep there..
