Hi Patricia,
I assume it's Albufeira old town that you're talking about; if so, log onto http://www.albufeira.com There is a section of their forum dedicated to the works in the old town, with photographic updates provided by one of their Portuguese members.

I was there last thursday & its still a shambles.
Cant understand why they didnt do it one section at a time instead of ripping up the whole town.

On this topic. Why was the Square dug up? Was it necessary work on the drains or something or was it cosmetic. I'm assuming they are going to change the look of it whatever the reason, anyone know or have images of what its going to look like?

I was told that they are upgrading the sewerage system as, with the growth of the resort, the old system couldn't cope.
With regard to the question of changing the look of the place, I would have thought that that was the last thing they would want to do - if they do that, it stops being the Old Town - just my opinion, of course. :)

We were there on wednesday and it is an absolute tip, real shame as it looks like it would be a lovely old square when finished but at the moment there are JCB's digging, dust flying around etc.

Is there a Modelo supermarket nearby ? Lidl and Aldi are the same where ever you go....very boring.
Is there a charge for the kids club or creche ? We have a 19 month old and a 4 year old and hope the'll enjoy playing with the other kids.
Going out 01 June - hope the weather isn't too hot !!!

There is a Modelo opposite McDonalds on the main dual carriageway through town. They have a kids club, but no idea if they charge. There is also a kids club with soft play area and one of them ball thingies at bella Vista, behind Pingo Doce (which is on the same side a McDs).

It's hot already mate!

My kids went to the soft ball area in the Modelo. I think it was about 10 euro for 3 of them for about 1.5 hours. Much the same as you pay at home really.

martin,
If you log onto http://www.albufeira.com and go into the forum, there's a local resident named cubsur, who has been providing up-to-date photo reports on the roadworks.

Hi Martin

Just got back from Albufeira and the old town is still not finished,it looks like it will take about another 3-4 weeks to finish(If going on what was done while i was there).
Although they are starting to put things on in the square(fashion show last Friday night)so somebody said, didn't go myself.

Hi Martin,

The photos Sagres mentioned are here. Wait for the 26 June photo album to load and you can then click on the right for "full view". It should work, but when I looked just now the slideshow was a bit erratic!! :hmmm

Hi Rose, Ive watched progress through Cubsur & have found the pictures really helpful, it doesnt look all that bad now compared to March & May. Our yougest son is out this weekend for 2 weeks and he will be delighted its nearly finished, although I suppose it wont spoil is visit to the Royal Orchid restaurant and plenty Monte Velho in his glass. Cheers Jayjan

Hi Jayjan,

Lucky him! Wish I was there! Let us know what he said about the Square when he gets back. From the photos it looks a bit sterile at the moment but maybe it's just because it's empty. Hope they haven't used all modern materials instead of the traditional cobbles. I see they've used them in the Av da Liberdade. I shouldn't think those nice azulejos have survived the makeover. Just hope it's still got some character. We won't see it for ourselves till September, when we will also hopefully be able to sample the delights of the Royal Orchid, which has been closed during our last few visits.

Hope your son has a good time! :glynis
