Hi all - In all the resorts there are markets - most of these have wonderful displays of fresh fruit and vegetables etc - why do these vegetables rarely make it to our tables ? - it's mostly rice or salad .
Perhaps the Turks think that we only eat chips ? - I love a nice bowl of fresh vegetables and potatoes .
I know that you can get the above in the places where the Turks eat and my family and I do eat in these places but it would be nice to be offered the same in the many other places that we all eat during our holidays - or is it just me

it must just be you. Every where we ate last year we were given fresh vegetables and cooked just right.
i dont think i have ever had a meal in turkey (in a restaurant) with fresh vegetables (well ..if you dont count the huge green pepper that is served with every meal)
even when staying with family in some of the smaller villages, they will always make chips,as thats what us brits eat!!
I think i eat more chips in Turkey than i do at home.
Hi Claire2005 - I forgot the Green Pepper !
I don't know it depends if you ask for it? I know some places do a lot of chips but we always ask for veg and salad and rice with our meals
i suppose it is a matter of choice and taste , never once when in turkey have i been given anything other than what i asked for.
I think the blame lies with us, the restaurants serve up what most of us seem to want, wherever we travel. Seek out the restaurants that serve good traditional turkish food with fresh vegetable and salads. When they are the ones where all the tables are full perhaps the others will catch on!
I don't even know what some of the vegetables that we saw were I suppose the answer would be to hire an Apt or Villa with cooking facilities - oops - Mrs Toffeemen has just fainted at the thought of cooking whilst in Icmeler

the people who grow and sell this fruit and veg deserve a mention .i have seen things like poatoes being hand washed and stacked up on the stalls like pyramids , not like here where everything is just dumped on the shelves .these people come down from the mountais at all hours during the night ,and return at all hours the next night ,and i am quite sure a lot of there produce is used by the resturaunts and not just by the general public ,if you ask for veg ,or whatever you will get it ,if not go elsewhere.
The farmers mentioned by Bluepeterno1 certainly derserve our support when we visit Turkey. What better way than to ask that the restaurants we go to serve their fresh fruit and vegetables. A win/win situation - they sell their stock and we eat great food. If only we could get the british supermarkets to stock the same quality of fresh produce as we see in the Turkish markets. Let's hear it for the wonky shaped, but very tasty tomato!
I could not agree more - the open air markets and even the Super Markets have a fantastic variety of fresh produce on display and it would be great if the restaurants that we eat at - served them.
I also miss the vegetables but I usually go to shops & get a lot of fruit to make up for it as well as eating the salads at breakfast time. As far as the chips go, we have it sussed - my friend doesn't eat rice and I don't eat chips so we just do a swap.
We have friends that live in Bodrum and they buy fantastic Fruit,Veg and Fish from the Markets - I will be seeking it out at restaurants on our next holiday in Icmeler July !.
