I've been to Quinta do Sol Hotel in April 2005.
It's a very clean hotel, nice rooms with excellent view.
It's very quiet and average ages of guest's I would say it would be above 50's.
The hotel as a small outdoor pool with jacuzzi for 4 persons, and by the pool there is a bar where you can order snacks and drinks (not cheap).
The food is average, I only went with breakfast included, and you can get some variety of food, quality acceptable...
hotel activities are almost inexistent, it has a very tiny gym and at night you can listen to piano, and that's about all.
alltought it's a bargain compaired with other hotels in the island, especially near funchal. You have to walk 2 to 3 kilometers to get to the center of Funchal, but it's a nice walk there, and you have plenty restaurants on the way.
One thing I recomend is to rent a car in the hotel, I got a renault clio for 3 days, and the price for the rent outside the hotel was around 30% to 50% more. Be carefull one the Madeira Island's roads if you never experienced mountain roads, the corners are narrow and if you get out of road you can easily fall out a cliff.
But if you take precautions it's kind of safe, I will recomend a trip around the Island. Take at least one day to visit each side of the island (west and east).
