Tropical Storms

Delta was in no way normal for Tenerife, in fact it was a bit of a freak occurrence. I would say that you would have to be extremely unlucky to encounter something similar two years running.

Well there is one due on the 6th of may 2008, so avoid coming then..........ask a silly question.............

May not get them two years runnung but Tenerife had them two months running. We caught the one in December 2005.

Thanks for your replies, lets hope our next holiday in November will be storm free and not a repeat of last year!
Arona I wasn't asking for a date, I meant was there a certain season when tropical storms are more likely to hit Tenerife, sorry if it came over as a thick question :?

Goodness, we went to Tenerife on 20th December last year and boy what a storm. We were diverted to Gran Canaria (where my plane went technical) and then i flew with Binter Canarias over to Tenerfe that evening. It was horrendous, really windy and chucking it down with rain like I have never seen before in England, or anywhere

The next day though was sunny as anything! What a contrast

ooppppsss!!! sorry, only trying to add a bit of humour, :?
There isnt really a season for bad weather, but in the winter months, it can be quite changable, ie when it rains, IT RAINS!!! but it never lasts too long

have a good one.

we also hit the december 2005 one, and the devastation was quite bad at the northern end of the island. I would say you would be unlucky to hit them 2 years in a row, however we did Lanza twice in 2004 in Feb and Dec and hit tropical storms both times.. the locals say they only get 14 days rain a year....we were there for all of them!!!!!

Hi,

We were on La Gomera when the storm hit Tenerife in November 2005 and didn't even know about it at the time! The only way of trying to predict these things is to keep an eye on the Atlantic weather charts to see what's heading that way but where and when they make landfall can be unpredictable and the effect can be very localised. The south of Tenerife and La Gomera experienced a day of drizzle and genreally unsettled weather for 24 hours but not much else but around Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera there is plenty of evidence that it too has experienced flash floods as a result of similar storms in the past. My impression is that they are more likely in the late summer/early autumn when the sea is at its warmest but that they're not unknown at other times of year.

The storm that hit Tenerife in December 2005 lasted for 36 hours. It lashed down non stop. That morning prior to it starting we decided to take the car and head to Tiede as it looked like it was going to be quite and overcast day (that is an understatement). Whilst driving along the mountain roads after the rain had started we couldn't believe our eyes, the water was just pouring over the edge of the mountains which gave the effect of water falls along the roads. There was also the occasional rock fall that had to be avoided but to give the Canarians their due, they had workmen with lorries removing the fallen rocks as soon as they were reported. Finally on returning to Adeje we found that most of the hotel/appartments were flooded along with shops and restaurants, hence I think that was the one night we ate in.

In LC, there was one poor guy who lost his boat. It was the only one that broke away from its moorings in the harbour. Instead of it being chucked around at sea, it was grounded and destroyed high up on the sands/rocks. We saw they guy surveying the wreckage later on.. poor man was crying and it was probably no consolation to him that it became a bit of a tourist attraction when everything had settled down. We took a trip up to Santa Cruz and going further north, there were many pylons etc that had been brought down and almost every house we saw in one village had parts of its roof missing. That was one nasty storm, but yes Jackie, credit to the workmen, they soon got things cleaned up.
Having said that, i think it would take more than a tropical storm to put me off going to Tenerife.

That yacht must be the one near the market place at Los Cristianos, we saw it in May, had been stripped bare of all the fixtures.

We were in Tenerife last August and there was a bad storm there one of the days - it didnt stop raining all day and night and our hotel restaurant and lobby actually flooded. Hope we dont have a repeat perfomance as we go in 3 weeks :D but eh you cant stop mother nature !!

I was there, too, for Delta, and although it was bad, I didn't think it was THAT bad. Though we did see trees brought down by the wind, ( one through the front of the Royal, near Columbus) I didn't think the rain was too bad. Loved walking on the prom next day - fabulous seas.

I was there in Nov, 03, I think it was, and there was a very severe thunder storm and I've never heard wind like it - it was eerie. Went on for several hours and the rain carried on for a solid 24 hours at least. Lots of power off and flooding.

Just got back now after 2 great weeks!

I quite like the storms though, although I don't like anyone being hurt by them - they're just so dramatic compared to British weather!

We were in Gran Canaria when Delta hit Tenerife. There was some rain during the day with a heavy swell at sea. It the evening, the rain got fairly heavy and it was quite windy too, but nothing much to write home about. The next day was lovely and sunny with temperatures of around 22c. We drove down to Puerto Mogan and watched the big waves crashing onto the cliffs. We were quite surprised to hear about the damage caused in Tenerife.
