My feelings are that unless you go looking for them in areas that would be there natural habitat you will never see one. (always have a good look under that sun bed before you relax )
Been to Cyprus quite a few times but have never seen a snake in any of the tourist areas. We did see a long black one up in the Troodos mountains crossing the road in front of our car. This really freaked me out as I can't stand them either! Clicked on your link Maurice100, but had to use the back button quickly as I can't even look at the pictures, I'll have to try hypnotherapy I think.
wizard

There was a shed snake skin in the garden of our villa but we didn't see the snake, just the skin
Mother has lived in Cyprus for the last 8yrs and loathes snakes - cannot look at photo or see on TV. Over the years (3 visits per) only hubby has seen 1 - a harmless whip snake at the enterance of Avakas gorge.
Two years ago we saw a couple of black snakes (about 18 inches long) in Paphos on the edge of the Cypria Maris gardens leading to the beach. I don't know who was more frightened though
Our cat recently took on a larger snake and got two fang marks on his left from leg, it swelled up to four times it's normal size, another of his nine lives gone, he is as you can see still alive but he will never learn to leave well alone...Dusty is a pedigree Persian cat, born in CY..and to answer the original posters question, yes there are snakes in all parts of the EU including the UK most are harmless if left alone, if in a holiday resort you will be very lucky to see any, the Cypriots will kill them anyway..
saintscully morning...
They sounded like black Whip snakes, totally harmless they only eat rats and mice and other vermin, they have no venom at all..sharp teeth though, we had one in our daughters garden about a twelve footer (oh yes that big) the wife got hold of it's rear end the daughter Helen who loves animals got hold of it's head, it was caught up in fishing net, it shot off at an alarming speed..I stood at a distance to keep out of there way of course..
Please don't worry about snakes, our cat looks after you!!!
What a lovely cat jim.
Snakes get such a bad press but to be honest the great majority are harmless and are far more scared of you than the other way round. Doesn't help much if you have a phobia I know but try and bare it in mind.
We went on the Troodos safari last Monday & seen one. It was black, 4ft & shot off as soon as i got my camera out! Typical!
A friend of mine used to be in the Army at the north of the island. He said that there was a small island just off Kyrenia that was called Snake Island. It was infested with them, but never really had any problem with them until he was in the throes of passion with a girl on the beach. He thought she was scratching his neck, but one of the bu****s had bitten him.
In my own opinion, and my greek cypriot hubbie there are plenty of snakes in Cyprus - what about the poor english lad who was on hol with his parents at Coral Beach Htl and stood next to flower urn next to foyer entrance for a photo and got a terrible bite and ended up seriously ill in hospital. I go to the beach a lot by the airport and always avoid the long grass and see snakes every time, plenty in my mother in laws garden too!
Returned from pernera on the 5th July and glad to say never saw any snakes, although the TC rep did say they were thereabouts but were seldom seen. If your hotel is in a built up area you will be fine, although must confess would keep away from grassy areas, saw some kids running through a field of melons and got a bit worried but the locals didn't bat an eyelid. The chance of encountering one is remote, however it is a possibility.
