There are at least four Maltese vintners. Marsovin, Delicata and two newer ones - Medina Vinyards and Camilleri.

A reasonable, cheap wine made from Maltese grapes is Marsoving Special Reserve. This is red, white or rose. In the shops it is about 80c and in restaurants it cost about LM2.

Some wines are fermentd in Malta from grape juice imported from Italy. There is a very nice Delicata Merlot Noir which costs about LM4 in restaurant.

There are some very respectable wines available on Malta.

Hi kinlar,

If you are after a good Maltese red wine, try Delicata Cabernet Sauvignon. It smacks of the true cabernet blackcurrant taste that you ought to taste in all cabernet sauvignon grape wines. Generally I have found Maltese to be drier than Australian or American equivalent wines. They do a very very sweet white wine by contrast as well as normal dry whites.

Remember to chill :hmmm - yes chill your red wines in Malta unless your room is air conditioned, since the room temperatures make the wine far too warm to enjoy. The Maltese generally chill their reds - so I have only recently found out!

Don't knock the Maltese cheaper wine in cartons. This 60+ cents (about £1) a litre stuff is what you will probably be served as 'house' table wine and although not the best it's okay for quaffing with your meal. Of course the more you pay the better the quality but we're quite happy sampling all that is on offer including Gozo wines, while we're there. :yipee

A word of warning - there is a wine known as Farmer's that can be bought both in shops and off street stalls. Be warned this wine can have quite a purgative effect! It's the one wine I tend not to bother with!!! :tut

One of my reasons for enjoying visiting Malta is their wines. They all carry a distinctive Maltese nose/bouquet which I didn't like when I first drank them :yikes but I actually look forward to this unique Maltese bouquet which I can discern and now expect. Has anyone else noticed this?

I really wish that Malta was selling its wines in our shops and supermarkets - but then again it gives me an excuse to nip over there doesn't it?? :fly

Hope this helps,

Trev

Hi Pussers, I agree - the green (and red) label are excellent value, as are the La Vallette both red and white - just enjoyed some of La Vallette on my roof in Sannat, viewing the fireworks over in San Lawrenz

Thanks to all for the info, I will look forward to sampling the wines. I have never seen any in the UK shops either, perhaps someone will find a market for it soon.

Hi pussers & Mark,

Thanks for the info. Have drunk red label red before but can't remember the flavour? :hmmm Must make a special point of trying it again and taking note! La Vallette is certainly an all time a favourite of mine,

Hi Trev

have you tried the new white La Valette ? I think it came out last year, and is similar in quality to the red

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info about white La Vallette. I don't generally drink white but Mrs bhm2trev does sometimes, so I'll get her a bottle and try a glass myself,
