Hi there
Love Menorca as an Island but am I the only one who now dislikes Cala Galdana as a resort
25 years ago it was great but now it is so crowded and gets more commercial every year from what I can see
Undoubtedly a beautiful bay but in my opinion it is now overdeveloped and overcrowded
We had a day trip there last year but would not visit again
Son Bou for the beach, Cala 'n Bosch for evening eating choice, Fornells for the scenery etc.
But if I had to be stuck in one resort without a car then Cala Galdana gets my vote. Each to their own.
I might be more inclined to agree with Richard if I ever went in the height of the summer months but when I go in October it's like a little piece of paradise with plenty of room on the beach for everyone and temperatures still in the 20's.
we have just come back from a couple of weeks in cala n bosch and had 2 days in cala galdana, we loved it, lovely beach the sea was so safe to swim in beautiful scenery, would definitly go back again.
compared with the chaos that was cala n bosch during the first week of july , cala galdana was like an oasis of calm, even though it was still busy, there was plenty of space and the restaurants were not packed, we had a fantastic couple of days there because we just had to get out of calan bosch, it was mad. if we ever go back to menorca we would stay at c. galdana. it is also very beautiful.
Went there last year and it was fantastic. It wasn't overcrowded the only downfall for me was the hill to get back to the hotel. Going to Cala'n Bosch in 16 days time and will be visiting Cala Gadana again.
Its a dirty beach with pine needles in the sand. Oil/petrol tracks on the water.
And a lovely smell of sewage!!!!!
I dont like cala galdana.

which cala galdana did you visit? it certainly wasnt the same as i did.
fizz xx
Had a major incident there and hubby was hospitalized for a week, and is still ongoing in court.
He cant bring himself to go there anymore.
It's true the beach is vastly overrated, it is dirty, and the sea also, and the film of oil on the surface. However there are much better and cleaner beaches each side of the resort, which you can walk to. The resort has had little development compared with those to the north and south of Cuidadela. I've only been twice about 20 years ago and about 2 years ago. I would still return there on the basis that other resorts are either too small or ugly sprawls.
I think son bou is the best beach followed by Arenal d'en castell.
Isn't it strange how most people using this sight love Menorca but disagree about the resorts they prefer.I think Calan Forcat is awful,Cala Blanca not much better and just like Richard think Cala Galdana is over rated.Ciutadella,Calan Bosch and Santo Thomas are my favourites, but for different reasons.
I want to be fair to the resort of Cala Galdana and make it clear that it is not a terrible place at all but just in comparison to how it used to be and to other less crowded places in Menorca I don't think it can be described as the must see place in Menorca like it once used to be by many people
I notice you praising Cuitadella above - when we went albeit for just one morning we just walked around a bit of a harbour area with a few bars and restaurants either side and to me it was not particularly inspiring - I had expected more
Have we missed something - is there a beach area or more to see there ?
I wish I could take the hotel Almirante Farragut out of Cala n Forcat and stick it in Cala Galdana!! I love the hotel but not Cala n Forcat so much - Cala Galadana has happy memories for us so it would be lovely if we could combine the two!
I too went in October and I found it to be beautiful, the beach was lovely and safe for the kids am going back this year... went to another resort whilst there and it was all chip shops and tacky shops.....give me Cala Galdana anyday.
Richard, there is no proper beach but Ciutadella has a real Menorcan character to it, something entirely missing from places like near neighbour Cala'n Forcat and something that some people including myself like to experience when holidaying abroad even if only for a few hours. Apart from the small port which is lovely, the old town's 'Es Born' historic quarter made up of medieval narrow streets and arcades is also worth a wander round as is the 14th century cathedral if you like that type of thing.
aren't peoples views subjective? ciutadella is okay, nothing special imho, whereas we found mahon to be much nicer, the shops are good, the market quite cheap, you can walk to the harbour and get fantastic views from the top near the cathedral and indoor market. the heat doesn't seem to get to you half as much as at ciutadella either. after an hour in ciutadella I felt like I was dying, whereas we spent half a day wandering around mahon, there was a lovely breeze blowing through the streets up from the sea. mont torro is also not to be missed.
I agree with the previous comment though that Mahon was more interesting - and has the benefit of Es Castell which is a fantastic place to eat
I feel like I am being negative about places but I am not - I love Menorca full stop I just want to make sure that I am not missing anything when I visit a place hence why I like to ask other peoples advice and opinions on websites like this
