I've just received a mail from the Westin Dragonara in St Julians about a forthcoming wine evening.
Apparently you buy a glass for 2.50 and can then enjoy unlimited wine from MonteKristo (local producer). As well as this there seems to be a wide selection of food and nibbles available as well as ice cream for the kids!
Date 17th til 20th August, Westin Dragonara Sunken Gardens, 1900 until 2300.
Free admission and free parking.
This sounds like a great opportunity to get to know some more Maltese wines!

Sounds good to me.
I have just emailed a friend who is chief engineer at the Westin for more info. I will let you know anything he replies.
Have you tried Marsovin 100 per cent Gozitan rose, Odyssey ? take a look here http://www.marsovin.com/marsovin/news_details.asp?newsID=96
I bought 2 bottles last year, it is a limited edition and all bottles are numbered. I gave one to a Maltese friend and drank the other. Beautiful. Hope there is still some left for me in September

Maltese wine is generally very good indeed and very reasonably priced too. Lucky you with the limited edition! We like the Delicata and the Marsovin very much.
I do have a bottle of Cherry wine which I picked up from Popeye Village, haven't tried it yet and haven't a clue where it came from but the sample was really tasty!

This is a liqueur not wine but is a 'must taste' for everyone in Malta.
Take a look here....> http://www.bajtra.com/
I've bought many bottles of this for friends in the UK, I love the honey liquer best of all!

I tried the Cherry Wine at Popeye Village, last week, very nice.I also tried their full bodied homemade red, very good.
Enjoy.
Not sure when it finishes, but there was a Wine Festival going on in the Upper Baracca Gardens this week
I think the wine festival in Valletta is the Delicata one and signifies the start of the grape harvesting season. Apparently it moves over to Gozo later in August sometime.

I understand that Malta also have a special concession from the EU to increase the area of vineyards in order to supply more home grown grapes.

Hi Susan, this is actually very good news, when we come to Malta we only want to drink Maltese wines not something that is labled up pretending to be Maltese.
Well, from what I read at the moment about 99% of wines labelled 'Maltese' are actually produced using imported grapes.
This has become a bit of an issue for me over the years so much so that I often refrain from drinking labled wines and have actually reverted yet again to drinking the simplest of village wines that I have been assured are made from grapes grown in SPB, and very nice and simple they are aswell, I hate fuss and pretention in wine drinking as people often don't know what they are talking about and are often swayed by fancy labels and prices, in fact only this morning on BBC breakfast news they set out to prove this very point.
Very true, I think wine preference is literally a matter of taste and nothing else. Some of the most pleasant wines are often those that are drunk everyday on the continent and have a price tag to match.
I coudn't agree more, people like Jilly Goulden and Oz Clarke in there campaign to educate us so called uneducated masses probably did more harm than good with the rubbish they used to come out with, if anything was designed to turn the average Joe in the street away from wine
