It was a bar in The Patch in Las Americas.

According to the BBC:

A five-year-old boy fell 30ft (9m) to his death at a bar in Playa de las Americas, while on holiday in Tenerife.
Jamie Owen, from Burnage, Manchester, slipped backwards off a stool, fell underneath a railing and down concrete steps into a basement.

He suffered multiple injuries and died the following day in hospital.

His parents were in a ground floor bar nearby, while Jamie was playing with a seven-year-old British girl he had met during the two-week holiday.

This is a very tragic situation, but I shouldn't worry too much about your families safety ... there aren't too many people that would leave a 5 year old unattended while they went to a bar !

This is a very sad case and one's thoughts and sympathies must go the family and all those involved in the tragic situation. MyraLock

Very sad news, thats awful, my thoughts go to the family. :(

And I don't wish to derail this sad thread but in my opinion Mike in Chayofa's comments above are untimely and quite frankly bang out of order.

I have to agree with Rosko. As a mum of 2 myself I know how hard it is to keep your eye on them at all times, even if you do have eyes up your bum, accidents can always happen, and in this case a tragic one.

I agree donnad. Accidents are always going to happen.

I think what Mike is trying to say is that most places here have the same safety standards as the UK, and that an accident can generally happen anywhere where children play unsupervised. I don't think Mike meant his post to be in the context it comes across as, he's not like that.

Like me Mike lives on the island and we see time after time the Island's reputation dented as holiday makers blame the lack of standards. Because of this we ex-pats tend to jump to reassure people that things are up to scratch.

I understood that he was sticking up for the resort but the "there aren't too many people that would leave a 5 year old unattended while they went to a bar !" part came across as assuming, biting and cold.

In reality there are plenty of parents who would leave a 5 year old and younger unattended (but within view) while they were sitting at a bar. It doesn't make them bad parents and if we're going to assume then no doubt the particular parents in question arn't suffering now because of carelessness but because it was quite simply an accident.

Rest in peace little Jamie.

I am sorry - it wasn't meant to sound that way. This is a very tragic incident and I wasn't 'sticking-up' for the anyone.

I have the greatest sympathy for everyone involved or anyone that was there.

I will make no further comments on this thread, but I would never let a 5 year old out of my sight.
