According to the literature I recieved with my Tunisiana sim 2 weeks ago, the validity varies.
It says the 5DT card is valid for for 3 months, while 10DT and 25DT cards are valid for 6 months. However any further top ups will extend the period to 3 and 6 months from date of top up. The line and number are preserved for 6 months from date of last use. If the service is not used within this period then the number is suspended.
There is also a service known as Tunisiana Light which runs on similar lines. The period of validity for the usage varies with the amount of credit you put on card. 1DT is valid for one day, 3-4 DT for 7 days, 5-9DT is 3 mois and over 10 DT gets you 6 months. Again the number is preserved for 6 months after last usage.

Thanks so much Dorra. I rarely leave it more than six months between visits and I was thinking of putting 10 dinar on to start with. I may put a bit more on just before I leave as well. Problem is that I'm going earlier than usual this time and six months will take me to mid April - the last week of April wasn't exactly brilliant this year so I may decide to go a little bit later next spring! Anyway, it's not a fortune so I'll start off with 10 dinars and play it by ear.
As you have friends there, why not leave your sim card together with 5 DT and get a pal to top it up if your return is going to be over 6 months. Just a thought.

whats the code to uk????
The code to UK is 0044. This applies from anywhere in the world. Remember to drop the first 0 in the number: i.e. 01702 123456 would be 00 44 1702 123456.
I was going to buy a phone card from Wh Smiths before i went
So if you byuy a tunisian simm card and ut money on it is it like pay as you go here.
Me again Ed - Yes, just like in England but I don't think you can buy Tunisian sim cards over here. I can't tell you where to get them in Hammamet but just ask around when you get there and someone will tell you where to go (and I mean that in the nicest possible way ) You do need to make sure your handset is 'unlocked' before you go, so that it will take a different sim. If it isn't done already, get that sorted before you go.
If buying a tunisian sim card you also need to take your passport with you or they will not sell you the sim. Every sim card is registered with tunisiana or tuntel whichever network you decide to use.
Also tunisiana, I use this network, better coverage than tunisie telecom, also they have shops where you can electronically top up instead of buying vouchers, look for signs outside shops displaying tunisiana light, these places you can top your credit up by as little as 1 dinar, instead of buying a 5 dinar card.
There are tunisiana shops mobile shops in most places, no problems getting a sim card there, also most phone shops will sell them too.
Tunisiana is excellent. I bought the SIM for 10 dinar then put 10 dinar credit on it (which costs 10.300 for some unknown reason). Having sent several texts and made a few calls, both local and to the UK, I still have almost 3 dinar left. The number is preserved for 6 months, until 1st April, and during that time I can just top up again. If I leave it any longer it will have to be re-activated.
I tried callin' a few times from Tunisia to the UK and most times my calls didn't come through... it only worked once out of about 6!
I didn't have any problems at all, though I usually texted rather than spoke. I couldn't believe the speed of the connection. I used Tunisiana as I heard they gave better coverage. I still have a couple of dinars left on my card but will not be returning until middle of April, whereas my number is preserved until 1st April, after which it can be re-activated. I'll try and send the SIM back with someone going out there in Feb or March so they can put another 10 dinar on it for their own use, return it to me and it will be ready when I go out there. It would be nice if we could bring a top-up card home and do it here, but apparently you can't. Neither can I get network coverage on it from here, so goodness knows what Tunisians do if they try to use their phones in this country.
If you want to send text messages, the cheapest way is to use skype, purchase credit and then sms your friends for 6p a msg with 160 characters. You can print out history also, so for anyone needing evidence of contact via sms that's not a problem. You can register your mobile with skype and then the recipient can reply back to your internet texts.
I've now realised why I can't get anything on my Tunisiana card over here - I forgot to set up the roaming facility when I was there - I feel such an idiot; talk about embarrasing. Never mind, I'll get it done when I'm there next.
hi aslemma. u don't need to wait until u are over in tunisia to get roaming. i have a friend who owns a mobile shop in hammamet barraket essahel and he told me to try emailing tunisiana. they have a website which is all in forereign but it is pretty simple to get the jist of it. i said i want roamng on my mobile sent them my mobile number. they emailed me back straight away asking for my passport number and the mobile number. they did it 4 me straight away. i now can receive messages off my tunisian mates over there who i didnt give my english number to.
Hi Becki, Many thanks for that. I've only just seen it though and in the meantime I've got it sorted. I sent my sim and £5 out with an English friend who's been in Sousse over Christmas and she's topped it up for me - it is obviously working OK because we have texted eachother. She has also set up 'roaming' so I'm all set now.
Also, set the 'language' on your phone as English, rather than the 'automatic' it is usually set on, otherwise you will get the menu in French.
Hia im new! this is for becky i think i know zac hes got a huge family douha, skanda, mohamed, walid. I know lots of people in hammamet.
no sorry dont think it is the same one. was wondering what you were on about as iv had trouble over christmas and i am not seeing anyone now. he had just 2 sisters and actually lives in barbarukka, how ever you spell it. welcome to the site anyway.
I'll be travelling to Hammamet in just over two weeks now (so excited!!) and have found out that my mobile phone network charges 1.70/min to make calls home. I was wondering therefore what the cheapest way to make calls to the UK would be? Could I buy a calling card from here (London) to take to Tunisia, or do they only work in the country they're purchased in? Or would it be best to have my phone unlocked and then buy a tunisian sim card whilst I'm there, depending on the price of sim cards there, that is. Oh, and whilst I'm here, could anyone give me an idea about how the weather is in Tunisia right now?! Thanks so much for your help!
Using your English SIM card can work out extremely expensive and should be avoided if at all possible. You can use public phone boxes (called Taxi Phone) which are much cheaper, alternatively a Tunisian SIM card will cost you about 10 dinar (just under £4). There are 2 companies, Tunisiana and Tunitel but Tunisiana is supposed to be the best for coverage etc. and is the one I have. It is very simple to set up but you will need to give them a copy of your passport. You can top-up with as little as 1 dinar, but it is best to get 10 to start with.
