Talking / Noise during the day?

Hey,

When we were in Turkey last year, we were in the apartment on the balcony and all of sudden, in the street, a voice came over what sounded like loud speakers. Everyone (Turkish) in the street stopped, and this went on for a few minutes. The voice stopped, and everything went back to normal.

It was very 1984-ish, and i'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what it was?

In some places you get local council announcements over a pa system especially if there is a local event or festival coming up.

Would agree with Fionay - we were told it's local announcements being made. Why not ask next time you hear them?

My mate was in Marmaris for a month leading up to the World Cup.

He heard some old geezer on a loudspeaker going on about "the Golden Generation" and how it was their turn this time.

Seems he's passed the mike onto some guy called McLaren - and the same old speil has been rehashed to imply the same thing will happen in an upcoming event in 2008?? :lol:

Keep him away from the microphone :twisted:

I dont know if it is the same as Greece but when we first went we thought it was a political thing when we heard it, then we realised it was a van selling all sorts of things from fruit and veg, to clothes and plastic chairs. Perhaps they do the same in Turkey although we didnt see or hear any of that in Marmaris last year.

we were in icmeler a couple of weeks ago & heard it everyday, probably about 3 times a day?? Not sure what it was but assumed it was a prayer of some sort

in the village the local Hoca will announce deaths of anybody in the village or connected with the village. he will also announce if bad weather is coming. Most turks will stop to listen to the message. It dates back to the msque being the only way to spread news, a bit like the church bells.

when we were in akyaka in the summer it was to warn everyone the water was going off, this happened a lot whilst we were there and i asked a turkish lady that lived in london so her english was excellent what the loud speakers were saying and she confirmed its either to warn about water or electrics going off mainly

We were told that sometimes appeals were made or blood donors if there had been an accident or an emergency operation was being carried out. Leg-pull or true?

They are used as a general address system, so anything from power cuts to voting information is read out for the public's information.

Thanks a lot for all your replies, i know it wasnt for prayers as i have heard that before but yes it was some kind of anouncement. Me, my girlfriend and some friends are going again on the 15th so will be interestingto see whether we will hear it again, if so i will make sure we ask what it is.
