hello all i am off to Kenya for honeymoon over xmas and new year. 7 day safari and 7 days in the sun and sand.
what immunisations would we need to get and also is it best to get them private or through the NHS.
kind regards
Dave
The one that generates the most debate is Yellow Fever. There hasn't been a YF outbreak for years in Kenya, it costs about £35 so some people don't bother with it. Personally, I think they're mad. At least if you've had it and there's an outbreak while you're there you won't have to chase about after vaccine! Lasts for 10 years and FCO travel website classifies it as advisory.
Private malaria prescription and tablets are the other thing you'll have to pay for. No malaria stuff is available on NHS. Boots on-line had the cheapest Malarone which has the least known side effects but is also the dearest. Lariam and Doxycycline are the other 2 you could pick from.
Your NHS GP can take care of all your vaccinations unless you have private healthcare anyway. Bad enough you'll have to cough up for the YF and mozzy tabs without paying for all the 'freebie' vaccinations as well!
We just did 6 nights safari and 7 nights at Diani beach, you are so in for a brilliant time - what a lovely honeymoon.
Hi, we're off to Kenya at Christmas. We have had the yellow Fever jabs and were told that they will not let you in to the contry unless you have the certificate to proove that you have had the vaccination!
All 4 of us just had yellow fever(£45 each) + typhoid ,tetanus and HepA(£25) each and now we have to get the malorone tabs!! I just wish the holiday companies would emphasise jsut how much the holiday cost can escalate due to all this profiteering on behalf of the Drs!! I will def try the Boots website for the pills as I heard they can be £44 for 12 tabs!!
Not sure why you had you pay for typhoid, tetanus and hep A as they are free at most doctors surgeries.
Only paid for hepatitis A still£25 each!!!!
My Hep A was free last year at my doctors. Your YF seems expensive too - mine was £30 last year.
Beegee i think a lot depends on what part of the country in which you live- bristol is notoriously expensive for things!!!!
Getting into Kenya without YF cert isn't a problem but if there is an outbreak whilst there you won't be allowed OUT. I agree that these extra costs escalate but at least you'll have no worries.
Don't forget the immodium, plenty of tissues and nick the sick bag off the plane - keep all 3 with you at all times. Hubby was taken bad whilst miles from our hotel, lucky the immodium enabled him to leave the safety of the loo and the tissues/bag meant he could throw up in the cab in a dignified manner!
