I usually find that with only 2 adults in the apartment, and all the under-occupancy supplements, it actually works out cheaper over the holiday to stay in a hotel
Sunset's brochure gives prices based on the number of people sharing, instead of putting the supplements at the bottom of the page and leaving you to add it up yourself, and they have some reasonably-priced holidays, but really the only way to get cheap self-catering accomodation for 2 people is to go DIY, where you're paying for the apartment instead of per person.

If you wish to go self catering for 2, you need to look out for accommodations that do 'studios' rather than one bedroomed apartments. These are often based on two (or sometimes three) person occupancy and then the underoccupancy supplement is less. You should still get some form of kitchen faclility, and a bath/showerroom, you just wont have a seperate bedroom and lounge.

That's correct. You shouldn't have any problems finding studios for two. Most holiday comapnies do a large variety. Collect a few brochures and take a look. Our holidays work out far cheaper now than when the children were with us (even when they went free) as we always ended up paying the under occupancy sup. for the appartment. Happy Hunting!

If my memory isn't tricking me I think there are quite a few accommodations that do studios in the Greek Islands so that might be a good place to start. You could pick a destination and post a thread on recommendations for studios.

I'm at the stage where a HB hotel for 4 only cost a few hundred pounds more than a 1 bed apartment. Couldn't feed all 4 of us for 2 weeks on that even in cheepo destinations like Turkey or Bulgaria. Which is a shame as we have a hankering for an apartment/eating out style holiday at present.

Happy hunting :D

Sometimes you find it cheaper to book a private apartment ie one bedroom and then find your flights and then it doesen't matter how many people stay in it i always book this way and save loads. It takes a bit of work like finding apartments to rent etc but will save you money especially if you go in peak season.

Depends on whan you go...if you can avoid the summer rush and go off season its possible to get some good deals...we've just been to the Algarve and had a private villa with pool (sleeps 12 but just the two us) for £250pp inc flights and carhire through Style Holidays.

And sometimes a "studio" apartment is just like a long bedroom, and not very spacious....so you will have to decide what is best for your budget and your requirements.

Most accommodations like to squeeze as many people in as they can, so it's more economical for them to build apartments for 4 !!

The reason I suggested a studio is that there are only two people going, I appreciated that in effect they are a large bedroom with a kitchen bit and a bathroom.

The poster was asking if there was a way to cut back on the costs of a one bedroomed apartment, where costs are based on 4 people. Studio costs are based on 2 people so you don't pay under occupancy.

Check out the private apartment rentals - they are priced per week regardless of how many bedrooms they have not per person. Always works out cheaper.

We gave up on SC some years ago. Even with late deals we found it was cheaper in a hotel.

We like to get out and about and the thought of making a meal or finding some where to eat does not appeal.

We personally prefer self catering because you are not restricted to eating in the same place at the same time every day. Don't get me wrong, although we go self catering I have never cooked whilst away, we prefer SC apartments for the space they gives us as a family of 5. It is hardly a chore to find somewhere to eat when on holiday; there's only like a zillion restaurants where ever you go, and for me that is part of the holiday trying different restaurants.

I agree with you Jackie. Self catering has always been the preferred option for me too. We never use the cooking facilities but make use of the fridge to chill the drinks (usually alcoholic). Our evenings are spent (after having a nice refreshing drink or two on the balcony) finding a restaurant to eat and then a bar to have a couple or more drinks and sit people watching. Does that sound boring? :D

ki77y. Sounds like a duplicate of our holidays. Total freedom to do as and when you want. Couldn't think of anything more boring than eating at the same hotel with the same people for two weeks.

I also agree we like to go s/c as we like the space we are a couple but just can please ourselves what we do the thought of being stuck in a bedroom for a fortnight (no thank you) worth paying the extra but on saying that we do alot of independently hols so one price regardless if there is 2 or 4 people using it. Cheers

It doesn't sound boring at all. I love nothing more than having a few pre-dinner drinks, then sitting in a restaurant being waited on whilst enjoying a few more drinks and people watching. If we want to eat early we can and if we want to eat late we can, it is our choice and not that of a hotel restaurant that is open from something like six till 9. Some days we don't even get back from the beach or a day out until 7ish. Holidays are a time to relax and chill out, there's enough rushing about, cooking and everything else at home.

I agree with the last few posts.......s/c every time for me and hubby!!!! Lots of space and the all important fridge + eat wherever, whenever you want.
I have been to hotels but prefer the freedom of s/c.......we never cook either and it's nice to be eating when you feel like it and not when the hotel stipulates.
We have booked our own apartment and flights separately now for years and find it cheaper than a hotel package.
