My Dad used to be the same Nette. He would have been 84 now. He was in Burma during the second world war. Got called up when he was 18, spent his 21st in a trench in the jungle. He wouldn't talk about it often, usually after a few drinks when his tongue would loosen.
He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery of which I am very proud.
Sarah
Bless him to all our old soldiers
Oh don't shut up Nette, its nice to share the "old boys" stories, if we don't share them then the next generation will forget and never be able relay the stories.
I've just watched your link and I'm in tears here....and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Pippy. I might send for that book for David for Xmas as a stocking filler.
He was born in the middle of the second world war and was evacuated from his parents when they started bombing London.
They sent him to Plymouth and then they started bombing there, because of all the navy boats.
Then he ended up in Yorkshire with a strange family and it is coincidence or what, that he chose to move up here permanently as a young man.
Sanjiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I love the idea that you attribute your love of Tunisia to the fact that your Dad was out there during the war. My Grandad (long since departed ) also referred to North Africa, and to me as a child it sounded the most glamourous place. Perhaps it's why I loved Egypt when I went this year for the first time?
He caught malaria and suffered from it but never moaned about it. My Dad said he would lay on the floor and they just used to cover him with a blanket until the shivers went away. Things must have been so different then.
Bless them all.

my father in law was inBurma too Sarah. He was a prisoner of war and till his dying day would not tlk to anyone about what he experienced.
I always find the Royal Festival Of Remberance Show at the Royal Albert Hall very moving. I just hope that 'We Never Forget' even when these brave men (and women) have all long since departed.
What a lovely thread, thanks for sharing the links and tales of loved ones xx
dad was ground crew in the RAF, for a while he was the driver of the fire appliance, he got a posting close to home ,and so slipped home for a couple of days on a long weekend pass, unfortunately my older brothers had measles which he caught thus putting him in sick bay for recovery , whilst there his appliance took a direct hit by a bomb killing 4 out of the 5 members of his team from what i gather this shook him up badly, so he was transferred to logistical support for a while.. that's all i ever knew about his action in ww2.
It's a great shame on those people who have allowed this to happen.
God bless those that are alive who have lost loved ones.
I hope not to detour from the original topic, but would just like to say, the younger generation are neither taught nor interested in history these days,
Driver I agree, it really is down to us to pass these things on. My son who is 14 knows all about my father and his battalion. Infact recently my fathers battalion ( The South Wales Borderers) was disbanded and their Colours laid to rest as there aren't many of the old boys left and the reunions we sadly lacking. Their was a service being held in the chapel in Glan Usk Park, Lady Legg Bourke was their patron (also lady in waiting the the Princess Royal) and the colours were laid to rest in the chapel on her estate.
Even though my Dad died 10 years ago, we had 4 Cars from our family full of my fathers family, My Mum, my two sisters and their husbands, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
It was a great day. And Luke was very proud to be their to represent his Grandfather.
