Hi
I hope someone can offer me some advice.I've booked a family holiday for Mexico in June 2007 but have just found out my oldest daughter who was coming with us will have had a baby by then which will be around 5 months old.I've never taken a baby abroad and wondered if this would be ok for a baby.I must admit I'm a bit concerned about the length of flight & the heat & I'm tempted to cancel but would probably loose our deposit. We're stuck going at that time as my youngest daughter will be doing her exams & I don't want her missing school.
Thanks
Some things you just can't plan for can you!!?? Haven't done Mexico in June, we were April, but it will be hot, but then again so is the Med if you go at peak season and I think that you can deal with. We found it perfectly comfortable in the shade and although you don't say where you are staying I would imagine most of the big hotels would be compliant as far as heating milk etc. You might also want to check with your GP where you stand with the vaccinations that are recommended for mexico in such a young baby and also malaria cover. Our girls needed hepatits A and Typhoid but were upto date on the diptheria, tetanus and polio which the baby should have had by then as well.
Personally for me the big worry would be the flight, simply, because at that age the baby is going to be on your knee for 10 hours. Is it too late for you to book another seat on the plane and get a skycot or take a car seat?( presumably you've ammended your booking provisionally) Flying with a baby on your knee isn't great, but at least at 5 months they aren't too big and if there are enough of you to take turns holding, you may find you are OK. You have the advantage that they aren't too mobile at that age, I would be more concerned with say an 18month old that really didn't want to sit still!
Sorry, probably not much help I'm sure when you get there you will be fine and so long as everyone shares the baby care on the plane you will manage. Just be prepared, make sure you take enough milk etc incase of delays. Don't forget the Calpol (if they can have it at that age)- one of ours manged to spike a temperature once through passport control and really just expect the unexpected and be ready for it and you will be OK.
Pam
Who are you flying with? if its first choice then their seats have the extra room, if any other operator try and see how much an extra seat would be
I took my daughter to Cancun when she was 7 months old and we had a fab time with her. I remember my people telling us we must be mad taking her on such a long flight but it acctually went really quickly as she kept us entertained. We chose Cancun over other Caribbean islands as we thought it would be easier to get hold of some nappies and things there. We were right, we just bought extra while out there. I was breast feeding still which made things really easy but took a travel kettle with me to make up powdered baby food rather than carry jars. The beaches in Cancun are lovely and the sea really warm. We had a baby seat for her to go in the pool with. We also took an activity play mat with us that we would put down on the beach for her to lie and play on and also the sun tent. She also wore the UV swim suits to protect her from the sun, which I still get my kids to wear and she is 6 now and my son 2 and he first travlled when he was 3 months.
Don't worry you will have a fab time. The mexicans were really friendly and loved chatting and playing with our daughter. Any questions please feel free to ask.
hi, we havent flown to mexico with a young baby but we did fly to florida when my little one was 5 months old. We upgraged our flight to premium and it was worth every extra penny. He was young enough to use a skycot which was great and slept for most of the trip. Didn't take him long to adjust to time change and we had no trouble keeping him cool and out of the heat - but be organised i.e suncream, hats parasols, fluids etc. I would say that our trip back was not so good as the flight was downgraded and we didn't have premium seats (we were refunded), this was nightmarish as the plane was crowded and we were very sqashed with a baby on our lap (no skycot on the return trip), which meant we speant 9 hours stood by the loos literally carrying the baby - this was no fun! The moral of the story is, if you are going with a decent airline (not mytravel) you should be ok. If possible I would always upgrade to premium seats when travelling with a small child as I think it is worth every penny. Hope this helps.
thanks for all your replies. It's put my mind at rest but I'm going to wait until after the baby is born and see how things go before we make our minds up
