Could someone please tell me the best place to stay for a week in Devon in August.
I am looking for somewhere that is beautiful and peaceful (private cottage if anyone knows of any nice ones with no-one nearby) but where we can get in a car to go to the beach or other things to do.
Thanks.
Have a look at Helpful Holidays website. A few years ago we stayed at a lovely old cottage in Doddiscombsleigh, about 10 miles or so outside Exeter. Beautiful countryside around the South Hams and Dartmoor. I'm sure you'd find somewhere perfect for you.

http://www.helpfulholidays.co.uk we have used them on several occassions and they are exactly what they say they are and their website is a delight. Also agree south hams area or Dartmoor you cant go wrong. Our particular favourite is Dartmoor particularly around the bovey Tracy area. We have stayed in ref A136 on the helpful holidays site which is in Lustleigh jast outside Bovey. A delightful place and fairly reasonable for somewhere with an indoor pool, games room etc if you have a family that would make use of the facilities. . also have a look at http://www.premiercottages.co.uk

We stayed here a long time ago and it's even more idyllic now. http://www.helpfulholidays.com/property.asp?ref=A29&year=2006
You will find North Devon quieter try arround Woolacombe and Croyde Bay the beaches are really good and youare handy for Exmoor and the South Coast is within striking distance for a day out too.
I would like to complement everybody on their excellent taste as I live in Chagford and know of Helpful Holidays
Dartmoor's always a really nice place to stay with great scenery. I stayed over at Holne Chase hotel for Christmas and you can easily idle away days checking out the scenery. Did hawking whilst I was there, definitely an interesting experience.
I would say Croyde, love the place it's beautiful.
