This is a cautionary tale. I know it was quite some time back but my friends who went to Goa two years ago was almost caught out by them when they went to change some money, while I was unlucky - especially if your mate is in a bad mood after drinking too much and wants you to just get the money changed and go.
I don't know what he Bureau de Change in question is called but it is situated up the main road heading towards the Bank of India and the roundabout. It is immediately past the Public Bar, on the far left and is sited on the side of the football pitch, which looks more like a very large gravel patch. I think you would have to walk down half the length of the pitch down to get to the entrance of the shop, which also allows you to make telephone calls abroad. I also think it might be popular as it is one of the first if not the very first Bureau de change that you come across when you walk up that road, offering a very good exchange rate.
Anyway, we went to change quite a bit of money but before the guy proceeded with the transaction (bald headed with a moustache), he asked to see my passport (which is standard practice) but also asked what hotel we were staying, what room number, when did we arrive and when were we leaving. I told him, even though I thought this was odd. When he came to give us the rupees they were all in 50rupees notes (lots of it) as oppose to 100 rupees notes as with most places. As soon as we got back to the hotel I found out that the guy had ripped us off by £10, which may not be much over here but is alot to them. Two days later we met up with some friends who told us they too when to that Bureau de Change and had both changed their own spending money in there. Upon leaving the premises they noticed something wasn't right as they had both changed different amount of cash and both piles looked the same. When they went back to the shop the guy said "I was just about to call you back, I have made a mistake".
As I said previously, another friend went to Goa two years ago also went to this place and they spotted something wasn't right and the guy said the same thing to them also when they went back to the shop. I've told the rep about this Bureau de Change but I'll don't she'll do anything about it.
Does any one know what this shop this called or has also been had by them? The moral of the story is if the guy at any Bureau de Change ask questions as to what hotel you are staying etc, turn round and run of the shop. Always count your money afterwards especially if they give your currency in low value notes to build up the pile of money. Personally I'd stick to the Thomas Cook Bureau de change or the Bank of India, even if they don't give you the best rate although the elephant shop seems to have received alot of recommendations.
i too was nearly ripped off by the same guy in the same place.....
I exchanged about £50 into rupees....i said thank you and left the shop...the guy in question was full of smiles and said he hoped to see us again.
Same again all the money was in 50rupee notes...a bit bungle of notes...as i walked across the football field i decieded to count the money....i was 1000 rupees short...i went straight back and as i walked through the door he had the money on the table...he said he was just about to come after me......i nearly pulled his lying cheating head off..thinking about all the tourists he had done it too and got away with it !!!!!
I still use the place everytime i go and ask him if he remembers me...he says HO YES....no problem anymore..
before the guy proceeded with the transaction (bald headed with a moustache), he asked to see my passport
We always change our money at one of the Elephant Shops (usually the one just down from the Magnum Hotel, next door to Guru Jewellers (I think).
If you're changing sterling they don't ask to see passports, but they used to do for traveller cheques.
We've always found them to be very good (and honest).

Like you Polly we also used the same Elephant shop over the past few weeks and never once asked for any form of ID etc.
one of the reasons I like to use this place to change money is so that my hubby can go in and 'do the business' and I can stick my nose up against the window of the jewellers (or have a browse in Leather Touch'.

Sounds like a plan polly
Am i right in thinking its on your right hand side as your walking towards the calangute beach, and on your left handside as you walk away from the beach towards the public bar?
I think i know which one you mean. Has it also got like a youth or tourist hostel near it as well?
If you are walking up the road from the Calangute beach, it's on the same side as the Public Bar and you will see it as soon as you pass the bar. I think it's the only one on the "football pitch" (on the far left).
Thanks, i know which one you mean now, i was on the right lines
I always use (6 years) Clares Money Exchange just along from Luma Supermarket in Calangute - he's a true local and a good bloke. We also use the tuk-tuks from outside his shop, they are very reasonable and are available all year round, one of them - Prim has the surname of 'Calanguted'(sp) one of the original inhabitants - apparently - I believe him anyway
immediately you went passed the football pitch (there are also some shops...including the bookshop...which would be 'behind the goal')
O.H. was a bit suss as when the guy was counting the money he was doing so slightly below the counter. They normally count the money out ONTO the counter..not just from one hand to the other. We got outside and O.H. recounted the money (the guy could see him doing this)...and THOUGHT we were 500rps short. He went back inside and the guy was in the phone booth...and without O.H. saying a word..the guy put his arm out of the booth and indicated the counter...where a 500rp was sitting!!! It seems they do this to cover themselves!!! In future whenever we changed money and it was counted out, O.H. would then ask them to do it again...SLOWLY this time
If this IS the same shop...I have a picture of it!
Hmmmm ...sorry...can I try and establish EXACTLY where this place is??? The one we nearly got ripped off in is right on the corner facing the main road. So.. walking TOWARDS Calangute beach...football pitch on the right hand side...this bureau/phone booth was the very first one O.H. was a bit suss as when the guy was counting the money he was doing so slightly below the counter. They normally count the money out ONTO the counter..not just from one hand to the other. We got outside and O.H. recounted the money (the guy could see him doing this)...and THOUGHT we were 500rps short. If this IS the same shop...I have a picture of it!
It would be nice if everyone on this site calls in and mentioned to him that he is "infamous" back in England...and people are been made aware of his little(Very big) trick !!!
My wife has informed me that if he tries it again with us he will recieve a good old fashioned slap !!!!
Albuerquque Villa's count their change out via a machine so there is never any doubt that you'll be short changed!
I did and foolishly let him hand me the cash, when I checked (later at the hotel) I was 1000 rps short which he must have palmed.
What annoyed me the most was he wanted a tip as well
and I note on several occasions in some of the shops mentioned above that attempts were made to overcharge on the same item perhaps 2 days
later. My motto is if this happens I don't use the place again its their loss not mine.
