I think Sokin's right - I don't know of one between Heraklion and Rethymnon. There's a really nice one the other side of Chania "Limnoupolis", but it would be a heck of a journey from Bali.

by looking at the map, and since i know the main roads in crete, i can say that its longer but easier driving to go to limnoupolis rather to anopolis or chersonisos.
Dont forget that the part of the road from Rethimnon to Heraklion is through the mountains, where as the road Rethimnon to Chania is in a way ''flat''.
So if you dont mind traveling longer use the day to visit limnoupolis and chania in one go. if you start driving at 8 you will be in chania at around 9:30. say another half an hour to limnoupolis (i dont remember the location) so about 10 you will start playing around with the water.
take a shower at the park and at 5ish drive to chania. visit the town, eat dinner and when ever you want you can drive back to bali.
same thing can take place if you go in Heraklion perfecture and visit the two parks there.its just worst road (according to my opinion).

Hi Lesrs :D

I stayed at the Louis Creta Princess, July 05. It's a really nice hotel for families, in pretty grounds. The pools are beautiful, the food great, and so are the animation team. Family rooms are a bit on the small side, with 2 twins for the adults and a small bunk bed for 2 kids. It's beachside but the hotel beach isn't brill, although we did ringos, banana boat and canoes from it.

I did put up a review which hopefully is still there. (Chris from London)

It's a bit isolated though. The nearest village is Platanais, 5 mins in a cab, bus or hire car. This has lots of bars, cafes & restaurants should you fancy a change from the AI or want to go out after dinner. It also has tourist type shops. About 25 mins away is Chania, which is much bigger and more sophisticated, with a lovely venician style harbour and lots of winding streets full of shops (leather, clothes, undercover market etc).

HTH Doe :D
Edit: not sure who you are looking to book with, but if it's First Choice, check Eclipse as well as they are often cheaper.

thanks for your reply we are still not sure which hotel to go for the petra mare has the slide but the princess seems to have slightly better reviews.

I've looked at the Petra Mare myself for 08 (although i'll probably go back to Turkey), it seems to have child prices that go up to teens which is very unusual on AI. It also has a wavelength club for teens and seems quite Brit orientated.

It depends on the age of your kids, I would say that the Louis Creta Princess would be great up to the age of say 12 but after that the Petra Mare might be better.

But if food is really important to you from what I read on Petra Mare reviews and what I experienced at the Creta Princess I would pick the Princess, provided being in Maleme isn't an issue for you. (wasn't for us as we had a car for the middle 7 out of 14).

The Creta Princess has a courtesy bus to Chania twice a day from what I remember, but you need to put your name down for it at reception as it's popular and I think there was a 'wally train' to Platanais but didn't use it.

We have booked for Petra Mare for August 2008 and can confirm that child prices are up to 16 - bonus for us as we have 3 kids aged 13 - 16. Most all inclusives make you pay adult prices once kids are older than 12.

Booked with First Choice and also got a free child place. There are 2 families going - other family also got free child place and reduction for child aged 14.
We paid an average of £700 per person for 14 nights all inclusive which we think is good value.

Hope this info helps people
