Hi, well I've done it, booked my first cruise, a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas, really excited as always wanted to there and see the Atlantis Resort. We are going with Royal Caribbean cruises on the Majesty of the Seas. Has anyone done this cruise before and got any tips?
Can you just walk into the Atlantis like most American hotels and have a walk round? I know the ship has it as an excursion along with the rest of Nassau.
We also dock at Key West, which will work out to be Thanksgiving Day this year. We are staying in Miami before and after the cruise as we loved it so much last November. We thought the shopping was better in Florida than New York so will be saving hard this year to spend it in the USA.
Yes you can walk from the port to the Atlantis resort. Did just that about 8 years back (I think about 8).
The hotel has a "lazy river" that allows you to slowly float around the grounds at a leisurely pace. Kids and I wanted a "go" but you need to be a resident and wearing an id. wristband. You can certainly go in the hotel, drink at the bars etc. I seem to recall it was expensive for a drink but not much more so than the ship.
We've been on Adventure and Voyager of the Seas but not Majesty although our trip was with a line, sadly gone now, called Dolphin Cruises.
Key West's OK for a wander around. Sloppy Joe's is a must for a drink. Wife enjoyed a visit to a house Hemmingway lived in. Loads of cats in there I gather so avoid if allergic.
Take a snorkel and mask - wonderful in the Bahamas. Take a lump or three of bread with you as it attracts the fish to you. If you're a confident swimmer don't let the safety czars inflate your life preserver too much as you'll vener get below the surface. Underwater camera (cheap disposable) would be good as would flippers althoughyou can hire the latter.
Thanks for your reply! I've been told the cruise is fabulous by quite a few people now so really looking forward to it. We plan on taking in Duval St in Key West, doing a bit of shopping and drinking etc and I do want to take in the Hemingway House esp for the six toed cats in there as I love cats and these are known to be very friendly indeed!
One question you may be able to answer is what food and drink are included on board? I get the impression that most of it is free and you pay extra only if you wish to eat in the fancier restaurants. I know the Majesty of the Seas is having a multi million refit this month so she should look great in November.
SWMBO has arrived back from work and informed me that you CANNOT walk to Atlantis. It's on an island and she reminded me that we took a small boat to get there. It can't be far though as Viv's idea of a small boat is the Voyager Class.
Not enough time at moment but will post again later (may be Monday) and answer any questions you might have.
Just quickly - all food on board is free except milkshakes in the retro burger bar. Might even have help-yourself ice cream dispensers like on Voyager class boats. All tea/coffee free. They operate a wine plan and soda plan (for kids). More details when I'm back on.
Cheers.
I took my first cruise on Majesty of the Seas and was hooked on cruising from then on.
She is in drydock (Jan 12th for 3 weeks) undergoing a major refurbishment.
There is so much to do onboard, you can stay busy all the time or just veg out and watch the ocean go by. Be sure and go to Johnny Rockets for a fun experience- it cost $3.95 to eat there but the waiters do a 'Staying Alive' dance routine after they serve your Burgers, its great fun. Apart from Johnny Rockets and Sorrentos (which will be a new specialty Italian restaurant) there is no charge for food onboard and you can eat 24hrs a day. Room service is also 24hrs a day- free apart from tip to delivery person if you want breakfast in bed for example. My favourite place onboard is the Windjammer cafe- casual dining at the front of the ship- I have lots of happy memories of sitting up there in the morning eating fresh papaya and mango for breakfast, watching the turquoise ocean going by..... it doesn't get much better than that.
I travel with teens so I always buy a soda Card (for Colas) as soon as we get onboard- it costs $4 per day and then you get unlimited soft drinks for the duration. That's a bargain.
You can be very busy keeping up with all the activities-read your Cruise Compass daily- that is a newpaper they deliver to outside your cabin every night,it lists all the fun things going on the next day. I carry mine with me all the time so I don't miss things.
Lots of fun on deck starts with the sailaway party- steel band playing while the waiters bring around Pina Coladas/Mangotango/Bahama Mamas- all fou fou drinks.-- tip- don't bother with the souvenir cups- they cost a lot more. EAch sea day they have fun around the pool- bellyflop/hairy legs/sexy legs/limbo competitions- it's hilarious. Then of course there are trivia competitions/Bingo/karaoke/talent comepttions/comedy clubs/Broadway shows to go to. I could go on and on.
There is nothing more magical than being up on deck at night watching the stars,it's literally heavenly.
For lots more info try a visit to Cruisecritic - any other day than today, they are upgrading the site but this is the largest cruise site- click on reviews and then your ship for professional review and then click on Member reviews for passenger comments. Also visit the 'Boards' where passengers ask questions- similar to this site but devoted to cruising. You're in for a fabulous trip.
I have done the Royal Swim with dolphins and it was thrilling, that was in Cozumel though. I think the one in Nassau is just the Dolphin Encounter.
That excursion always sells out fast so book ahead if interested.
Atlantis resort- it costs $29 to take a tour but for me the greatest attraction there is the waterparks and slides- which are not available to cruise passengers- for the admission fee you get to see the grounds/Casino/Aquarium/beach.
Cocoa Cay is paradise. White sand/turquoise sea/all the beach toys you need/hammocks under the palm trees/waiters bringing Pina Coladas around/BBQ cooking. It is a great day. You can rent snorkeling equipment there if you want,or pedalos/jetskis/floats.
Be sure and check your Cruise Compass for the 'Quest Game' and go at least to watch or if you're up for fun then compete- I'm laughing now as I think about it. I have sailed several RCCL ships and I never miss it.
We have the Majesty of the Seas listed on our cruise review site:-
If you are going to Nassau I would recommend a visit to the Pirate Museum (also shop & pub attached)..just a short walk into town (second street back.... turn right off the key). particularly if you have a couple of kids.....not too lengthy and very reasonable cost.
Thanks for the replies so far...I get the feeling that I will want to cruise again after our taster to the Bahamas! I will be scouring through the Cruise compass magazine to see what's on, we will definitely want to take advantage of what we can and try to do different things and have fun! The constant Pina Colada's sound great! We ate at Johnny Rocket's in Miami in Nov 2006 and it was great, esp the real strawberry milkshake!
Just don't miss the QUEST game. My face aches from laughing whenever I go.
