Hi
OH and I are thinking of flying to Toronto in October 2008 and visiting Niagara before driving up to Montreal and then across into Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and finally onto Boston, flying back to London from there.
We'll probably only have a fortnight to do this in and want it to be fairly leisurely, although we don't want to limit our activities solely to leaf peeping! Can anyone tell me if this is feasible?
I did try to work out rough mileages on a route planner, but something seems to go wrong every time I try to get across the border. I assumed this was because there were only certain points that you can cross. But I had no better luck when I put in St Bernard de Lacolle. Am I missing something really basic?
I visited Canada once before over 30 years ago, so I don't remember too much. I stayed in Guelph and visited Toronto, Ottawa and Niagara. I do remember how lovely the people were though.
Any tips will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Sue
The mileage gets complicated because USA is in miles and Canada in kilometers, but I kept my mileages if you want details.
Most importantly it will cost you a lot of money in sur charges if you pick up the car in Tornoto and drop it off in Boston, so I would think about a round route to drop the car off. Toronto to Boston is an easy drive over either one or two days dependingon your flight home time.
Car hire is cheaper in the USA.
Now thinking of making it a round trip from Boston, going in a roughly anti-clockwise direction. The car hire from Boston is quite reasonable, but the hotels seem really expensive. We will probably aim to spend the first 2 nights there. Have you found any reasonably priced accommodation in Boston on your visits that you would recommend?
I can't really answer this one as we,ve only ever used the budget chains for the odd nights in Boston at the start or end of our trips and couldn,t recommend them. So I'll leave that for some one else to answer unless you really want to know what we got for $80 per room.
I also use Hotels dot com- lots of info and photos of hotels here plus it is a reputable site to use for reservations.
Thanks for that - I have been looking on Trip Advisor, very useful site. Torn between the Lenox Hotel and Charlesmark Hotel, which are both quite central in the Back Bay area or the Doubletree Guest Suites with are not so central, next to the river Charles; these offer more space and a free shuttle service to the centre of town for less money. Has anyone stayed at any of these or does anyone have an opinion on location?
