Hello all, last time we were in the Algarve we hired a car and traveled to most of the sites along the coast, poped over to Spain for a few hours, went up to Alcoutim. This time we would like to go a bit further up although not in the Algarve more in the Alentejo we have been looking at Mertola. Has anybody ever gone up to this town and if so is it worth the trip from Albufeira?
Dave.
Hi Dave if you want a good day out yes i would say so go for it something different,Mertola is next to the Guadian river and a typical Alentejo town miles different from Albufeira.
Thanks luis, it looks good in the travel books should make for a super day out.
Mertola is much more Portuguese than anywhere you are likely to come accross on the Algarve coast. It's a beautifully maintained village where all the buildings (at least when we were there a couple of years ago) appeared to have been freshly painted.Unless you have a fair bit of Portuguese take a phrase book with you as English is not as widely spoken as on the coast.(That's not a criticism-that's how it should be ! )
Hello Sagres, none taken I try my best with all these leagues so far I have had a go at 4. Portuguese/French/Spanish and I am trying to learn the basics of German at the moment as we are to Berlin soon.
When I said "that's not a criticism" I meant of the villagers, not of you.In other words,it's a Portuguese village not really in the front line of the tourist industry and they shouldn't be expected to speak/understand our language.
Anyway, don't know about you,but when I do manage to make myself understood in their language and,(more difficult still,I think)understand them,it gives a greater sense of achievement.
