My partner and I are planning to go to Malta at the end of March. This will be our first visit to Malta so wondered if:
1) The weather is likely to be good enough to spend time on the beach?
If so, which are the best beaches?
2) Is Mellieha the right kind of location for a couple who want a
reasonably quiet break in nice surroundings but be able to get out and
about to visit places (on the bus) and have a few drinks in the evening?
3) We are thinking about staying at the Solana Hotel as it seems to be
well reviewed as a good quality hotel, would people agree with this or
suggest somewhere else? Any tips on board basis/ food, rooms etc?
3) Are there any particular restaurants in Mellieha (or any where in
Malta) that you would recommend for vegetarians?
Sorry for all the questions, any advice gratefully received as we want this trip to be special, as we've just got engaged!
Thanks
Pumpkin
Maltese weather http://www.maltaweather.com/climate.shtml
March is fine for sitting on the beach, but too cold to swim - best beaches - well, atleast in March they will be nearly deserted ! Ramla on Gozo is excellent, others will tell you the best in Malta
sorry, can't help on the rest
We've been to Malta a couple of times in recent years during March. Firstly it can rain quite heavily and it can also be bitingly cold even when the Sun shines! However, the weather will be mixed and some days it will feel like summer as it is back in the UK. If you can get out of any chilly winds, which by the way tend to be cooler by the sea, then you could be quite comfortable in the sunshine. Bathing in the sea would be out cause it's far too cold but as for spending time on the beach Hmmmm?
Mind you during Feb/March time Malta is much greener and it's more pleasant to get around and it also tends to be quieter. It's during that time that our pensioners spend time in Malta taking advantage of the cheaper prices and avoiding the British winter, after all it's always going to be better weather wise in Malta no matter what time of the year you go!
Have a great time,
Trev
didn't you just put exactly the same post in the Gran Can section about Mogan?
There are lots of fine restaurants in Mellieha, I'm sure a lot of them will have a veggie' dish on their menu.
You will have a couple of bars just outside your hotel and also four social Band/Sports bars in the square where the church is. There are also bars down at the bottom of the hill near the Luna hotel, and three pub/bars on the Heights which you can find by walking up the hill turning left, walk for about a quarter of a mile.
The busses are frequent so you can get around the Island easily enough and you are only a five minute bus ride away from the ferry port to Gozo.
The beaches may be too cold to sit on so don't rely on doing so, you may be lucky with the weather but it is a gamble at that time of year! (cold winds).

Any advice about hotels would be helpful too if anyone has any comments? Or further advice in general, every little helps!
Thanks again

PS. That's right Val and Rob we are hoping to spend a week in Gran Canaria and a week in Malta as we've ended up with some much Annual Leave. Time to relax and chill out!
Gozo is nice. The beach at Ramla is worth a try! But car hire is much more recommended in Gozo in order to visit the odd places, otherwise you'll end up where all the 'other' tourists go! There are good restaurants all over Malta. One advice: wherever you see an empty restaurant avoid it; wherever there is a jam packed one, most probably it is a good one! Gozo is the destination i recommend. Weather is unpredictable, depending your luck!
