Gramps totally agree with what you say - how the hell can they earn enough, but then again if they get just one first time visitor to spend RS250 on say something that should costs RS50 they've made enough to feed the family for a couple of days!!!
I have to give them a bit of credit for being clever (or should that be irritating) enough to know where the money is, after all they have the sense to know that sitting at their shop on Baga Road all day is not going to get as many "victims" passing by as they'd find on the beach.
I've paid over the odds on the beach, purely for the fact that it's convenience and I'd probably buy a lot more if they'd leave me in peace now and again.
I used to love going to various sections of the Baga / Calangute beach but this season I have stayed away for this reason, such a shame.

We sat on baga beach near enough for 2 weeks between 18th jan and 2nd feb, I bought off the beach - t-shirts 200rps - wallet - 150rps - indian style shirt things which I won't wear back home - 150rps. Handbag for missus - 600rps - "designer" sunglasses - 250rps. All of these prices were a lot cheaper than the prices asked in the shops, so i'm going to beg to differ - the beach is cheaper!.

Incidently, we sat in between Captains Cabin and Angel Heart and watched the police take money from every beach seller on a weekly/daily basis - they wore normal shirts over their white uniforms - if they paid they were ok but we saw them actually hit young girls and beggars across the head - why? - not because they were pestering tourists but because they could'nt pay their "baksheesh"

Disgraceful

Rs 200 for a t-shirt - you were ripped off - try Mapusa market on a friday - Rs 80 for "Lacost"

Don't approve of the police tactics - but then I don't want to encourage the economic migrants from Karnataka either.

In 15 years of visiting Goa at least twice a year I've never seen anything being sold on the beach that I could'nt get cheaper and usually better quality either in the shops or one of the markets, so obviously I,m not going to the right part of the beach for all those bargains !!! Alan

You probably can get cheaper at some of the markets, but you probably pay something for the convenience of shopping from your bed!
