If you can't find a Chania flight, if you don't mind DIY you can just about make it from Heraklion! It's 3 hours on the bus from Heraklion to Chania then 2-2.5 hours down from Chania to Paleohora. On the way back you could take a mini cruise on the 9.30 ferry to Hora Sfakion (2 hours ish) and get the bus up from there to Vrisses (1 hour) and from there to Heraklion (2 hours)....depends if you like seeing the countryside by bus (we love it!)

If that doesn't appeal - I believe Plakias has some of the feel of Paleohora - easily reachable from Heraklion.

Or Myrtos on the south east coast (but I think Kosmar have dropped this wonderful place now)

i might sound bit strange but cant you find a low cost flight to one of the main airports and then book a holidays to crete in order to fly to heraklion?
i know its two planes for each way but hey think like its winter and there are no charter flights.
regarding paleochora i like it even though i dont remember lots since the last time i was there.
regarding myrtos. its a good thing kosmar is not sending people over. lets keep a few places as unspoiled from mass tourism as possible

You might like to look up Aegean Cronus who fly from various airports in western Europe to Athens and then connect regularly to Crete all year.

They're not expensive (by scheduled standards) and have regular flights. Just a thought ........

worth a look on websites like travelsupermarket.com and Asda travel(there are many to choose from) to find flights even if it means a change of aircraft in europe.
