we stayed at the gala hotel in playa del carmen, our rep from first choice (and also sister canadian company signature? holidays) had done the winter stint in hautulco bays. she said its gorgeous and gave me a load of leaflets she'd got on the area - the gala hotel is the best one out there that first choice do apparently - better quality than the barcelo, crown pacific and castello - but all of those are still good hotels. i think we will go next year to hautulco having been to carribean mexico coast of playa del carmen twice in the past - we love mexico and the pacific bays area still very much has the mexican old style feel apparently. i wouldn't worry about the weather - we've been to mexico in may and it was absolutely fine, if it rains it won't last long then be sunny again and can be a welcome relief from the heat!

there are some amazingly good last minute deals to hautulco at the moment on the first choice/eclipse direct websites. hope you decided where you were going and if it is hautulco i'm sure you'll have a great time from what i've heard.

Thanks for your reply. It does sound like a really good place to go. Haven't booked anything yet as we are currently looking at somewhere slightly closer because of the flight and my two year old. However if we don't go this year I am sure we will deffinately go next year. All depends now on prices for the rest of the Caribbean for May half term.
